Mayweather will

face Cotto on May 5

Floyd Mayweather Jr. got almost everything he wanted when he received a boxing license that allowed him to name an opponent and a date for his next fight.

What the unbeaten champion didn't get was a showdown with Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather will fight Miguel Cotto on May 5 at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden after Nevada's athletic commissioners granted him a conditional license for one fight before he goes to jail in June.

Mayweather (42-0, 26 KOs) chose Cotto (36-2, 29 KOs) as his next opponent only after failing to land a date with Pacquiao, the superstar Filipino congressman. The two sides have discussed what's likely to be the most lucrative fight in boxing history for nearly three years without reaching a deal.

The Colts owner said he will monitor Manning's recovery from Sept. 8 neck surgery over the next month and may wait until the last possible moment to determine whether to pay the quarterback a $28 million roster bonus, redo the five-year contract he signed last summer or risk losing the four-time MVP as a free agent.

Items left at Paterno memorial are stored

The dozens of signs, bouquets of flowers and other items left by fans at the Joe Paterno statue outside Penn State's Beaver Stadium in honor of the late Hall of Fame coach have been removed and stored inside the stadium to dry out.

University officials say the items were removed with the knowledge of Paterno's family. Penn State says the family will have a chance to review items to decide what to keep or donate.
