Volunteers head to Missouri
The Volunteers in Mission from Effort UMC will be leaving for Joplin, Mo., this Saturday. Among the group is the Rev. Robin Fisher.
In her absence, the weekend's worship services will be led by Ken Edwards, a Candidate in Ministry, on Saturday, Feb. 18, and by the Rev. Bob Argot (ret.) during the three Sunday services, including the 8:30, 9:45 and 10:30 a.m. services, on Sunday, Feb. 19.
The 9:45 a.m. service is the monthly contemporary service.
Attend Lions meeting
Members of the Western Pocono Lions Club and the Western Pocono Lioness Club attended the Lions District 14U cabinet meeting held at the Lake Naomi Club in Pocono Pines.
Representing the Lioness Club were Virginia Lamendola, president; Ruth Smith, vice president; Camille DeSando, secretary; and MaryAnn LaLumia, treasurer.
From the Western Pocono Lions Club, attendees were club President Charles Rush and his wife Joanne Rush; PDG Bob Argot and wife Adele; and Chris Sweeney, past council chair, and his wife, Rita Sweeney, a member of the Stroudsburg Lions Club and a Western Pocono Lioness Club member as well.
Lions meet
The Western Pocono Lions Club will meet Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Olde Mill Pizza and restaurant in Sciota, beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a social hour. The business meeting begins at 7 p.m., including dinner.
The evening's program will be presented by Peter Romeo, who will speak about helping those who are no longer able to do their own home maintenance work. Visitors are welcome.

Historical society
In 2013 Chestnuthill Township will be celebrating 250 years as a township. The Chestnuthill Township Historical Society invites residents to join them in their quest to preserve the history of the township for future generations. The next meeting is at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb.15, at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building on Route 715.
Diversity Task Force
The Pleasant Valley School District Diversity Task Force is scheduled to meet from 9:30-11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the district office in Brodheadsville.
Ash Wednesday services
Effort UMC will hold its Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22. It will be led by Ken Edwards, Candidate in Ministry. The theme for the Lenten series that begin on this day is: Give it up.
A different facet of giving something up will be the subject of the midweek services. On Feb. 29, the topic will be: Giving up Control.
Our Lady Queen of Peace, Gilbert, will hold Mass on Ash Wednesday at 8 a.m., 12:10, 4 and 7 p.m.
Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville will hold an Ash Wednesday worship service at 7:30 p.m.
Making bird feeders
Residents are invited to make pine cone bird feeders at the Chestnuthill Park, Brodheadsville, from 10 a.m. until noon, Saturday, Feb. 25. The West End Park & Open Space Commission will host this free event.
Participants will receive everything needed to make feeders to take home.
Kids Against Hunger
For the third year in a row, the Monroe County PA Chapter will sponsor a multigenerational food packaging event on May 19 for the benefit of Kids Against Hunger, in order to significantly reduce hunger locally and globally. This outreach project will take place at Zion United Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.
The food packets, which are a fortified soy/rice casserole style meal, will be distributed to local food pantries and to the children at the Village of Hope School in Haiti.
Last year's event made 37,584 meals. Through fundraisers and various donations from individuals, businesses and community organizations, $10,404 was raised. Members are hoping to increase that amount this year to be able to do more for those in need.
