ESU gets record-breaking weekend from Vavra's

East Stroudsburg University's Sami Vavra and Karoline Vavra both set new school records over the weekend and the two sisters were also part of a relay team that broke an ESU mark during the final days of the 2012 PSAC Swimming Championships.

Sami Vavra, a junior and Panther Valley graduate, lowered her own school record in the preliminaries of the 100 breast on Saturday. She swam a time of 1:06.70, lowering her record of 1:07.22 that she set at Grove City in December. She had a time of 1:06.88 in the final in the evening session and finished eighth.

Karoline Vavra, a freshman and PV grad, set a school mark in the 100 free in both the prelims and consolation finals on Sunday. Karoline broke the six-year old record in the prelims of the 100 free with a time of 53.57 seconds, then came back to break it again in 53.48 to place 13th in the consolation finals. Vavra came into the weekend with a season-best of 54.32.

The two were also part of the 400 free relay team that trimmed more than 2.5 seconds of the old standard, set in 2010. ESU's time of 3:35.30 knocked off the old record of 3:37.84.

Sami also participated in the 200 breast and set a personal best of 2:30.35. She just missed setting a school record in the event, finishing less than two-tenths of a second off the mark of 2:30.19.

Karoline took more than a second off her personal best in the 200 free. The freshman turned in a time of 1:58.02 in the consolation finals to place 16th.

The ESU team set new records in five different relay events during the Championships, which were held at Cumberland Valley High School. Sami was a part of four of those records while Karoline took part in three of them.
