Wednesday's Sports in Brief
Woods wins at MPC;
top seed Donald out
Tiger Woods had to play a left-handed shot out of the desert. Retief Goosen holed out from 156 yards and didn't even win the hole. Dustin Johnson twice won a hole after taking a penalty drop.
But the strangest sight of all at the Match Play Championship didn't come from the golf course.
It was Luke Donald on his way to the airport.
Donald lost 5-and-4 to Ernie Els, becoming only the third No. 1 seed to lose in the opening round.
UConn's Calhoun
will have back surgery
UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun will have surgery next week to address a lower back condition and will miss the Huskies' next two games.
The university said the status of the Hall of Fame coach, who has been on a medical leave of absence since Feb. 3, will then be evaluated on "a day-to-day basis."
Piniella will work

Former Yankees manager Lou Piniella has been hired by the team's YES Network as a special contributor.
Piniella will help with 20-30 events this year, including some game telecasts. He also is with the team as a spring training instructor in Tampa, Fla., near his home.
