Marian and Northwestern girls triumph

Marian and Northwestern posted victories in girls basketball action on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Shenandoah-Marian

Marian turned in a dominating defensive performance to defeat Shenandoah, 37-21, in Schuylkill League action.

The Fillies, who played the game without double-figure scorer Danielle Trinstani, didn't allow Shenandoah (3-4, 1-2) more than six points in any quarter.

Gabby Green led Marian (6-2, 3-0) with 11 points. Kelly Shober added nine points and Lindsey Nemeth chipped in eight.

Marian won the JV game, 26-21.

Catasauqua

-Northwestern

Northwestern blanked Catasauqua in the opening quarter and rolled to a 44-19 Colonial League victory.

The Tigers, who led 15-0 after the first period, were offensively by Sara Jones' 16 points. Trista Cunningham chipped in 10 points.

Northwestern improves to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the CL.

Pottsville-Panther Vy.

Pottsville edged Panther Valley, 36-35, in a Schuylkill League game.

Madison Blasko led the Panthers (5-3, 0-2) with 10 points. Abbey Whilden chipped in nine.

The Panthers, who hurt themselves with a 6-for-20 performance from the foul line, had a pair of potential game-winning shots in the final 10 seconds miss the mark.

Pottsville won the JV game, 50-20.

Pleasant Vy.-ES South

East Stroudsburg South used a big third quarter to rally for a 53-45 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Trailing by three at halftime, The Cavaliers outscored PV, 18-8, in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Tara Steakin had 22 points to lead ES South.

Kelecia Harris had a big game for Pleasant Valley (4-4, 1-1) with 23 points. Arden Cisluycis added eight points.

The Bears were just 7-for-22 from the free throw line in the contest.

Pleasant Valley won the JV game, 39-28.

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Shannon Zimmerman scored a game-high 15 points to lead Pine Grove to a 45-40 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Maria Streisel led Tamaqua with 10 points. Christine Streisel added eight points and nine rebounds.

Tamaqua falls to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the Schuylkill League while Pine Grove improves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Tamaqua won the JV game, 31-20. Jaclin Valasek led the Raiders with 14 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Stroudsburg

-Lehighton

Jacob Battle led a trio of double figure scorers as Stroudsburg cruised to a 67-37 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Lehighton.

Battle scored 16 points for the Mountaineers, David Clowney added 14 points and Winston walker came off the bench to score 10 points.

For Lehighton (1-8, 0-3), Anthony Rossino and Alex Guyn led the way offensively with eight points apiece.

Stroudsburg won the JV game, 46-39.

Jarrid Strong's 17 points led Catasauqua to a 58-34 Colonial League victory over Northwestern.

Pine Grove used three pins and four forfeits to breeze to a 57-12 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Colin Mashack and Nick Toth both had pins to account for the Blue Raiders' only points.

Chad Dubosky had nine points for Panther Valley

Tamaqua downed Panther Valley 47-15.

Matt Minchhoff and Zach Coleman led the Raiders (6-2) in scoring with seven points a piece.

Stanko led the Panthers with six points.
