Youth Famine
The Youth at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville held a 30-hour famine Jan. 7-8.
The funds they realized will be split, with 30 percent going to the Village of Hope Lazarus Project, 30 percent for Kids Against Hunger, and 40 percent to the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network.
Rotary speaker
The West End Rotary Club will welcome Sue Scarborough of the Stroudsburg YMCA as speaker on Thursday, Jan. 12, at the club's 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting at the Western Pocono Community Library, Brodheadsville.
No January UMW
The United Methodist Women of Effort UMC will not meet in January. The group's next meeting is in February.
PV board meets
The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 12, in the district office in Brodheadsville. District schools will be closed Monday, Jan. 16, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. School resumes Tuesday, Jan. 17 and the Diversity Task Force will meet in the district office at 9:30 a.m.
Special Sundays
On Sunday, Jan. 22, churches through the region will be celebrating Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. This is the Sunday that falls closest to the anniversary of Wade vs. Roe court case which made abortion legal in the United States.
Also, posters are up in area churches of various denominations announcing the Souper Bowl of Caring. It will take place on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5.
Youth retreat
Pocono Plateau is the site for the Jan. 20-22 Youth Retreat for a group from Effort UMC. Ken and Wendy Edwards are coordinating the attendance for this retreat.
Historical society
The Chestnuthill Township Historical Society will not meet in January. The next meeting will be 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building, Route 715, Brodheadsville.
PIC meeting
Pride In Chestnuthill (PIC) will not hold meetings in January or February. The next PIC meeting will be March 8 at 7 p.m., at the township municipal building on Route 715.
