Lady Wreckers fall to Hurricanes
Saturday was a good night for the Weatherly girls' basketball team as it picked up its third win of the season.
Last night's Schuylkill League game against Schuylkill Haven turned out to be far from that, however.
If anything could have went wrong for his team it surely did, and Weatherly head coach Paul Hadzick had no problem saying it after his players dropped a 32-26 decision to the Hurricanes.
"We didn't shoot," Hadzick said. "We didn't play good defense. We didn't rebound.
"All of the fundamental things of the game of basketball we didn't do tonight."
Instead, Hadzick watched the Hurricanes (3-12, 1-6) utilize everything that he wished his Wreckers (3-11, 1-6) could have done. The Hurricanes picked up their first league win of the season.
"This team (Schuylkill Haven) only brought six players, five played all night and they beat 10," said Hadzick, of a Haven team that had four players sideline with injuries. "Schuylkill Haven came with the desire to play. They came with commitment to succeed backed with a lot of pride. And, they beat us."
After falling behind 14-4 quickly after one period of play, the Wreckers played their hardest in the second quarter, in which they outscored the Hurricanes to pull within two right before half. Erin Dougherty scored six of her team high seven points in that quarter, while Jess Polchin added four points.
At halftime, Hadzick tried to get his Wreckers motivated, but his intentions for his players never seemed to cease throughout the final half of play.
"We told them at half that we have to jump on them and not let them get away since they were only up by a few points," Hadzick said. "After that, we came down and started throwing the ball away. You just can't turn the ball over the whole time and when we turned the ball over, they scored. It's as simple as that."
The Wreckers did pull within one (22-21) with 4:32 left in the third quarter on back-to-back jumpers by Erin Dougherty and Alex Boyarski.
After that, the Hurricanes' Emma Schweigert hit the front end of two free throws with 4:19 left to play and then Sarah Celani nailed a three-pointer with 1.3 seconds left in the third quarter. With that, the Hurricanes took a 26-21 lead into the final quarter.
The Wreckers started the fourth quarter just like they did the second stanza as Tracy Galada and Dom Adamczyk hit back-to-back jumpers to pull within one again (26-25). Schweigert spoiled the chances for the Wreckers to take its first lead of the game by hitting a jumper and nailing two free throws.
Erin Pernick capped the Hurricanes' 6-0 run with two free throws to finish with 10 points, while the Wreckers' Boyarski ended the game's scoring by hitting one of two free throws.
