Jim Thorpe area students in grades pre-K through sixth were recently treated to a May Fair sponsored by the L.B. Morris Parents and Teachers Association. This is the fifth year May Fair has been held at the school.

"The kids work hard all year and they deserve some fun to release energy and know that we care about them," said Julie Renode, PTA president.

"The PTA exists for the children and they tell us that this is the kind of fun they enjoy the most."

This year the heat looked like it would be an issue, but students were told to bring hats and sunscreen. There was cool water to drink and water games to play.

The PTA rented three large inflatables that provided exercise and entertainment. A bounce house in the shape of SpongeBob SquarePants (an annual favorite) as well as a rock wall and competitive obstacle course were also available.

Parents and PTA members helped with face painting, tug of war games, water relays and other activities. There were also Hula Hoops, rubber balls and ladder ball games for the children.

A separate May Fair was held the following day for grades seven and eight with different inflatables.

The PTA hopes to do be able to sponsor May Fair again next year and raises funds throughout the year to make it happen. With budget cuts and tough economic times, financial support from groups like the PTA is often the only way schools can provide students with field trips, pizza parties and other rewards. By supporting these groups, area residents help children have a more exciting educational experience.
