Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met June 14 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 89 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided an inspirational reading.

Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "At Dawn's First Light." Vice President Nancy Gerber and secretary Joan Anne Garber provided their reports.

A get-well card was sent to Joan Deitrich.

Upcoming events include a pizza party in June, a Chinese auction and trip to Shady Maple or Vanity Fair in July and a picnic in August.

The meeting included refreshments of hot dogs and chips and concluded with cards and social games.

The group meets every Thursday at 1 p.m., at the community center. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.

Cressona band

The Cressona Band will be appearing locally two more times over the summer months, providing free entertainment to all.

The next performance will be held at the East End Playground, at 7 p.m., on July 18.

The final appearance will be Aug. 5, from 4-6 p.m., at Heisler's Dairy Bar in the Lewistown Valley.

All of the performances will include show tunes, marches, overtures and songs of yesteryear.

First Communion

Joel Thomas Smith of Vernon Hills, Illinois, eight year old grandson of Tamaqua residents Ann and Tom Starry, recently received his First Holy Communion at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Wadsworth, Ill.

His grandparents, as well as godparents, Olga and Tom Williams of Tamaqua, all traveled to Illinois to share in the special occasion.

Joel is the son of Jason and Kelly Smith.

St. Peter's Union

The Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville.

Also on Sunday, the Sunday school class trip to Knoebel's Grove will begin at 1 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Thursday, prayer group will meet at 4:45 p.m.

Calvary UM

The Rev. Ed Bean will officiate at this Sunday's 10:25 a.m. worship service in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church.

A time of prayer and praise will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Good News Day Camp will be held from June 25 through June 29 at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle.

Activities will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and will include Bible lessons, crafts, recreation and a few surprises.

Participants are reminded to wear sneakers and bring a bagged lunch.

The day camp is sponsored by the Child Evangelism Fellowship of Schuylkill County.

First Methodist

The Rev. James Cavallero will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in First United Methodist Church.

Children's Sunday school will be held following the service.

The summer movie series will begin June 24, at 7 p.m., with a presentation of the film "Wesley," which dramatizes the life of the founder of Methodism. Admission and refreshments are free.

Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, quilters meet at 9:30 a.m.
