Three local girls at U.S. Swimming Olympic trials
Three TIMES NEWS Swimmers of the Year are at the U.S. Olympic Team Swimming Trials at the CenturyLink Center, in Omaha, Nebraska from today through July 2.
Allysa Vavra, Madison Burns and Kristen Shickora, who all earned the honor during their high school careers, all take to the pool giving it their best shot at trying to make the Olympic team.
A 2008 Panther Valley graduate, Vavra, a 2008 Panther Valley graduate who went on to swim at Indiana Univesity, is seeded 11th in the 400-meter IM and 15th in the 200 IM. The 400 IM will be held today, with preliminaries slated this morning and finals at 7:45 p.m. The 200 IM prelims are scheduled for Wednesday, with semifinals Wednesday evening and finals Thursday evening.
Burns, who graduated this spring from Northwestern Lehigh, will swim for the University of North Carolina, will swim with Vavra in the 400-meter IM and is seeded 68th.
Shickora, a 2008 Marian grad who swam for the University of Georgia, will compete in the 100 backstroke as the 11th seed and the 200 backstroke as the 60th seed. Preliminaries for the 100 backstroke are Tuesday morning, with semifinals slated for Tuesday night and finals Wednesday evening. The 200 backstroke prelims are Saturday, with semifinals Saturday night and finals Sunday night.
NBC will show a live broadcast of the event finals each night. NBCOlympics.com will also stream coverage of each finals session. NBC Sports Network will show the fastest heats of preliminaries on tape-delay each night leading into NBC's broadcast of the finals. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. each day and finals get underway at 6:45 p.m. each evening.
