Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met June 21 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 82 members in attendance.

President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided an inspirational reading. Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "Little Things." Vice President Nancy Gerber and secretary Joan Anne Garber provided their reports.

Upcoming events include a nonperishable food drive at the June 28 meeting, benefiting the Salvation Army Food Bank; senior citizens' expo on July 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Schuylkill Mall, Frackville; trip to Vanity Fair and Shady Maple on July 30.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

The group meets every Thursday at 1 p.m., at the community center. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.

Couponing class

The Tamaqua Salvation Army will sponsor a free class on the best ways to collect, organize and use coupons. The "shop smart" workshop will be held July 10, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at 105 W. Broad St.

Guest speaker Julie Del Priore will offer tips on combining coupons with in-store sales events, stockpiling, store reward programs, bulk shopping versus coupon shopping and ways to spot the best deals.

The program is provided as a free ministry, but participants are welcome to bring a canned goods donation for the Salvation Army's food pantry.

Back to school

The Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network has initiated a "Back to School" project, similar to its recent "Belle of the Ball" prom gown project. The group is collecting school supplies as well as new or gently used clothing items meeting the dress code policy of the Tamaqua Area School District.

Donated items may be taken to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mauch Chunk Street, Mondays and Wednesdays, noon to 5 p.m. or Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Items will be distributed in early August.

St. Peter's Union

The Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. Summer Sunday school will meet at 10:15 a.m.

Activities for next week will include: Thursday, prayer group will meet at 4:45 p.m.
