Sorority news
Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Feb. 22 at the Sports Zoo in Lansford, complete with Mardi Gras celebration.
Donna Gerber served as hostess, serving traditional New Orleans food such as gumbo, jambalaya and King Cake.
The March 10 breakfast fundraiser has been canceled.
A used clothing drive has been scheduled for June 2.
Members discussed the Annual Community Easter Egg Hunt, which will be held March 31, at noon, at the Bungalow Park.
Children up to the age of 10, who reside within the Tamaqua Area School District, are welcome to attend. The Easter Bunny will make a special appearance.
A discussion was also held on the Mid Eastern Convention.
Following the business session, members participated in several Mardi Gras games, including "pancake toss."
The next meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. March 14 at the home of Nancy Meiser.
The theme will be a retro look at the 50s, 60s and 70s.
Senior citizens
The Tamaqua Seniors met March 1 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 82 members in attendance.
President Jean Machamer conducted the business meeting and provided an inspirational reading.
Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "Seeing the Beauty Beyond." Reports were offered by secretary Joan Anne Garber, Rose Triano and Nancy Gerber. Dolores Angst and Marion Schaeffer were added to the sick list and Norma Scheidy is recuperating at home.
A discussion was held concerning an upcoming Chinese auction.
Dates were selected for two upcoming trips, Shady Maple on March 19 and Knoebel's on June 20.
The group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the community center.
Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.
SS. Peter and Paul
Stations of the Cross will be held every Wednesday, at 7 p.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Stations will be preceded by a holy hour of prayer, including a recitation of the rosary, beginning at 6 p.m.
A holy hour of prayer will also be held every Saturday, from 4-5 p.m., during Lent.
The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed during these holy hours.
Choir rehearsals will be held following the Wednesday Stations of the Cross, beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The Holy Name Society will meet this Thursday, at 8 p.m. The meeting will be preceded by a Mass at 7:30 p.m.
Bethany EC
The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional and 10:30 a.m. contemporary worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church.
Sunday school classes will be held at 9:30 a.m. Also on Sunday, Kevin Rogers will speak, at 5 p.m., about short term missions in Kentucky.
Activities for next week will include: Monday, Women of the Old Testament group meets at 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m., GriefShare will be held at 6:30 p.m. and The Story group will meet at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, the Jesus' Final Week group will meet at 1 p.m., Men's Fraternity will meet at 6:30 p.m.; and the Forgiveness group will meet at 7 p.m.; Friday, the group Courageous for Men and Women will meet at 7 p.m.; Saturday, musician rehearsal at 9 a.m., Praise practice at 9:30 a.m.
