PIGS GAME DAY
The Rundown: Lehigh Valley splits two games on Tuesday, winning the first game, the continuation of the May 4th and losing the second, regularly scheduled game.
Game 1: Iron Pigs 5, Knights 4
With the May 4th game at Lehigh Valley tied 3-3 when lightning and rain halted the contest. When play resumed, Lehigh Valley's Cody Overbeck became the star of a game he did not start...Taking over for Hector Luna (Phillies) at first base, Overbeck went (3-for-3) and accounted for both Lehigh Valley runs including his walk off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning that gave Lehigh Valley the 5-4 win...Overbeck also homered in the sixth inning to give the IronPigs a 4-3 lead...Tom Cochran took over last night for the original starter Pat Misch and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings...Michael Schwimmer (2-0) blew the save opportunity when he gave up the tying run in the eighth but was awarded the win on Overbeck's heroics.
Game 2: Knights 3, IronPigs 2
Derrick Mitchell gave Lehigh Valley a 1-0 lead in the third inning with his fifth homerun of the season. An error in the bottom of the inning provided a boost for the Knights as the pinned 3-runs, two earned, on IronPig starter Pat Misch (L,3-6). After back-to-back singles to start the Charlotte third inning, Greg Golson attempted a sacrifice bunt. The errant throw by IronPig third baseman Tim Kennelly allowed both runners to score... The big hit of the inning came off the bat of Charlotte's Dan Johnson. His double gave the Knight's the eventual winning run...Lehigh Valley had a tough time solving Dylan Axelrod (W, 4-1) who pitched a complete game four hitter, striking out five and walking none. The other IronPig run came on a solo-homer by Erik Kratz, his fifth on the season.
Notes - With the Game 1 results being applied to May 4th, Lehigh Valley improves to 18-5 at home. They also improved to 23-3 in games in which the offense has scored three runs or more...The loss now drops the IronPigs road record to 9-14. It also puts the IronPig record in 1-run games at 12-3...Erik Kratz hit his first major league homerun in Philadelphia Tuesday night and was sent back down to Lehigh Valley. He has now hit safely in 10 of his last 145 IronPig games (15-for-50,.300) with five homeruns and 13 RBI in those contests...Tuesday's 2-0 shutout was the fifth of the eight game homestand and their 7th shutout on the season. They are quickly approaching the team record for shutouts that they set in 2011 with 12...In that famed eight game homestand, Lehigh Valley starting pitchers were 6-2 with a 2.20 ERA and at one point, a 25-scoreless innings streak...With seven LV pitchers having now registered a save in 2012, Lehigh Valley leads the IL in record when having the lead after five innings (19-1).
