Tamaqua picks up wins in five sports

Tamaqua picked up victories in boys soccer, girls soccer, volleyball, tennis and cross country during a busy Wednesday of scholastic sports action.

GIRLS SOCCERTamaqua-Blue Mountain

Tamaqua used and a solid defensive effort in the second half to pull away with a 4-2 Schuylkill League Division I win over Blue Mountain.

Kailee Rottet provided the spark in the first half with two goals. Lynn Kistler and Brynn Lehatto added the push in the second half with single scores that helped the Raiders snap a 2-2 halftime tie.

The Blue Raiders' keeper Carly Sassaman grabbed 10 saves in goal to secure the win.

PM West-Lehighton

Pocono Mountain West rolled to a 6-0 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Lehighton.

Kelsey Tambasco scored two of Pocono Mountain West's six goals.

Kayla Troutman made 14 saves in goal for the Indians 1-5, 1-8).

Salisbury-Palmerton

Salisbury scored six goals in the first half and never looked back, en route to a 10-1 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Macenzie Gruff and Devon Engle tallied three goals apiece for Salisbury, while Marissa Strunk scored two goals.

Palmerton's lone goal was scored by Brianna Bush off an assist from Sabreena Strauch.

Palisades-Northwestern

Northwestern outlasted Palisades 2-1 in Colonial League play.

BOYS SOCER

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

Giovanni Passalacqua scored two first half goals and led Tamaqua to a 4-1 Schuylkill League victory over Pine Grove.

Josh Delp and Eric Fiorilla rounded out the scoring for Tamaqua.

Tamaqua outshot Pine Grove 20-4 and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Tyler Cimino had two saves in goal for the Raiders.

Northwestern-Palisades

Northwestern scored twice in each half as the Tigers posted a 4-0 Colonial League victory over Palisades.

Brandon Ettl, Kyle Willis, Dillon Billig and Matt Hershey scored one goal apiece to lead Northwestern (5-1). Boston Furjanic added two assists.

Kyle Snyder had to make just one save for the Tigers.

Lehighton-PM West

Lehighton scored two first-half goals en route to beating MVC foe Pocono Mountain West, 2-1.

James Farano and Anthony Rossino tallied the Indians.

Goalie Geoff Ebbert made 13 saves in net for Lehighton.

PM East-Pleasant Vy.

Pleasant Valley scored a goal in each half to post a 2-0 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Pocono Mountain East.

Chris Neff recorded a first half goal for the Bears, while Chris Skutnik added an insurance goal in the second half. Teammates Jack Wathen and Haris Sabovic were credited with the assists.

PV's keeper Andy Hansen grabbed three saves to earn the shutout win.

Pleasant Valley remains undefeated at 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Blue Mountain-Jim Thorpe

Blue Mountain scored two goals in the second half, en route to a 2-0 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Casey Crammes got the Eagles on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal, while Tristen Coello scored off an assist from Bryant Penberth.

Jim Thorpe's Justin Kaminski stopped four shots.

Palmerton-Salisbury

Salisbury scored four goals in the first half and remained undefeated on the season with a 6-1 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Kevin Barahona and Sean Adams scored two goals apiece for the Falcons (9-0, 6-0).

Gabe Scott scored Palmerton's lone goal off an assist from Austin Shupp.

Richard Roselli made 13 saves in goal for the Bombers.

No. Lehigh-No. Dame

Gio Mowrey and Eric Strong scored two goals apiece to lead Notre Dame to a 6-0 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

FIELD HOCKEY

Lehighton-PM West

Lehighton scored early and often, en route to an 8-0 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Pocono Mountain West (0-8, 0-5).

Sarah Keer recorded a hat trick with three of Lehighton's six first half goals.

Emily Mantz also scored twice for Lehighton, while Lacey Haldeman, Brooke Blasiak and Alessandra Rossino tacked on one goal apiece.

Lehighton held a 12-2 advantage on corners.

Lehighton's Kristina Schnell made just one save to record the shutout.

Pleasant Vy.-PM East

Pleasant Valley edged Pocono Mountain East for a 1-0 win to remain undefeated in the Mountain Valley Conference.

The Bears' Abby Roselli scored the game's only goal.

Rachel Wild posted eight saves in front of the PV cage to preserve the shutout victory.

Pleasant Valley improves to 5-2-1 overall and remains undefeated in the MVCat 4-0.

No. Lehigh-Saucon Valley

Saucon Valley used a second half goal by Elyssa Okken to post a 1-0 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Okken's goal came on a pass from Celia Lancaster 4:45 into the second half.

Saucon Valley outshot Northern Lehigh 10-1 and held a 9-3 edge in corners.

Nicole Horn made nine saves in goal for Northern Lehigh.

Palmerton-Moravian A.

Moravian Academy scored five goals in the first half and shutout Palmerton, 6-0.

Madi Sheetz and Dana Turner scored two goals apiece to lead Moravian Academy (5-2, 5-1) while Natalie Drelles dished off three assists.

Palmerton saw its record fall to 2-5.

Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Southern Lehigh remained undefeated on the season with a 4-0 victory over Northwestern.

All four Southern Lehigh goals were scored within a six minute span in the second half. Maria McDonald, Emily Marshall, Lizzie Thom and Michelle Moreira had goals for the Spartans.

Southern Lehigh (8-0, 7-0) outshot the Lady Tigers 23-0 and had a 9-0 advantage in corners.

Northwestern falls to 0-6-1 in the league.

GOLF

Jim Thorpe-Lehighton

In a showdown between non-league rivals at the Villas Crossing Golf Course, Jim Thorpe got the best of Lehighton for a 363-410 victory.

The Olympians' Mike Helmer led all golfers with a medalist score of 86.

Jordan Knappenberger had an Indians' team low of 94.

VOLLEYBALL

PM West-Tamaqua

Tamaqua posted its first win of the season with a 25-14, 25-21, 27-25 sweep over Pocono Mountain West.

Carly Trovinger has seven service points, four aces, four kills, 13 assists and five digs to pace the Raiders. Devan Sweeney chipped in nine service points and five aces, while April Donnon added 10 service points and five aces. Rylee Devlin also accounted for eight points, five aces and three kills.

The Tamaqua JV team won 2-0.

GIRLS TENNIS

Tamaqua-Hazleton

Tamaqua dropped the first singles match, but won every other match in straight sets, en route to a 4-1 victory over Hazleton.

Sarah Zoba and Vicky Krouse notched singled wins for the Raiders, while Morgan Miller/Carly Fenstermacher and Laine Confer/Madelyn Dolinsky posted doubles victories.

Tamaqua-Schuylkill Haven

Tamaqua swept Schuylkill Haven in a Schuylkill League cross country meet.

The Tamaqua boys won 26-29. Schuylkill Haven's Sam Brennen won the race in 19:35, but Tamaqua's Dustin Sabol and Andy Tite finished in second and third-place respectively.

The Lady Raiders posted a 23-37 victory. Chelsea Frantz paced Tamaqua with a first-place time of 23:19.

The Northwestern cross country teams posted Colonial League sweeps over Catasauqua, Palisades and Wilson.

The Northwestern boys defeated Catasauqua (22-33), Palisades (15-50) and Wilson (19-36). Northwestern's Tyler Stelmack finished with a winning time of 16:04. Ryan Cerrone also aided Northwestern, finishing fifth overall.

In the girls' meet, the Lady Tigers defeated Catasauqua (15-50), Palisades (15-50) and Wilson (19-36). Haley Yost crossed the finish line in 19:16 to lead Northwestern with a first-place finish. Carley Pierre and Rachele Cerrone placed fourth and fifth respectively for the Tigers.

Jim Thorpe-Minersville-Pine Grove

In a Schuylkill League tri-meet, the Jim Thorpe boys came away with two wins, while the Lady Olympians earned a split with Pine Grove and Minersville.

The Jim Thorpe boys defeated Pine Grove 15-50 and handed Minersville a 26-29 setback. Jim Thorpe's Christian Fields crossed the finish line first with a winning time of 18:17, while Johnathan Condly finished right behind him with a time of 18:44.

In the girls' meet, Jim Thorpe defeated Pine Grove 19-42, while Minersville defeated the Lady Olympians 23-38. Minersville's Cassidy Mason won the race with a winning time of 22:37. Jim Thorpe's Courtney Capper placed second (22:49) and Catherine Condly finished third (23:07).

Blue Mountain-Shenandoah -Weatherly

Weatherly hosted Blue Mountain and Shenandoah Valley in a Schuylkill League tri-meet.

The Weatherly boys defeated Shenandoah Valley 15-50, but dropped a 17-41 setback to Blue Mountain. Danny Challenger (Blue Mountain) won the race with a winning time of 20:50. Weatherly's Luke Figas finished in fifth place.

The Lady Wreckers were swept by Shenandoah Valley (22-37) and Blue Mountain (15-50). Blue Mountain's Courtney Dukmen finished in 22:46 and paced a contingent of Lady Eagles that took the top nine times. Lindsey Douglas' 12th-place finish led Weatherly.
