Pleasant Valley shuts out Lehighton

Pleasant Valley blanked Lehighton in boys soccer action to highlight Monday's scholastic sports action.

BOYS SOCCER

Pleasant Valley-Lehighton

Pleasant Valley blanked Lehighton in Mountain Valley Conference action, 2-0.

Connor Phillips scored both of the Bears' goals in the first half.

Northwestern-Bangor

Bangor defeated Northwestern 1-0 in a Colonial League game.

Will Talero scored the only goal of the game in the first half on an assist by Josh Parrish.

Northwestern held a 14-4 edge in shots, but couldn't capitalize on the advantage.

Palmerton-Catasauqua

Palmerton scored four goals in the first half and went on to defeat Catasauqua, 6-2, in Colonial League play.

The Bombers' Austin Shupp recorded a hat trick on the day and also picked up an assist. The other Palmerton goals were scored by Gabe Scott, Jon Schwartz and Dylan Furry. Scott had two assists.

PM West-Tamaqua

Pocono Mountain West scored three goals in the first half and defeated Tamaqua 4-0 in a non-league game.

Rapalo had two goals for Pocono Mountain West. Pocono Mountain West had 20 shots to Tamaqua's 12.

Pocono Mountain West also won the JV game, 3-0.

GIRLS SOCCER

Pine Grove-Jim Thorpe

Pine Grove defated Jim Thorpe in a Schuylkill League game, 2-0

Koontz and Zimmerman had the two goals for Pine Grove. Pine Grove had 24 shots on goal while Jim Thorpe managed only seven.

No. Lehigh-Pen Argyl

In Colonial League action, Pen Argyl defeated Northern Lehigh 2-1.

Amber Kibler scored the lone goal for Northern Lehigh in the first half. Erika Krawchuk added the assist.

Pen Argyl outshot Northern Lehigh 17-3.

Bangor-Northwestern

Northwestern defeated Bangor 4-0 in a Colonial League game.

Sarah Segan had a hat trick for Northwestern and Anna Fricchione added another goal.

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Pottsville scored three first half goals and made them stand up for a 3-0 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Maddy Suender, Gabby Benz and Maci Roos scored the goals for Pottsville. Carly Sassaman recorded 12 saves for the Raiders (8-4-1, 4-2-1).

Tamaqua earned a split with a 1-0 win in the JV contest on a goal scored by Sage Frey.

GIRLS TENNIS

Tamaqua-PM West

Tamaqua defeated Pocono Mountain West 5-2.

Tamaqua took two of three singles matches with Nicki Mateyak and Vicky Krouse scoring victories. Tamaqua also took three of four doubles matches.

On Senior Day at Jim Thorpe High School, the Olympians lost 3-2 to Allen.

Haley Cope had the lone singles victory for the Olympians.

East Stroudsburg South topped Lehighton, 474-588, in MVC action.

The Cavs' Reggie James and Molly Italiano shared the medalist honors. Each shot a 77.

The Indians' leading man was Jordan Knappenberger. He came in with an 87.

VOLLEYBALL

Freedom-Pleasant Vy.

Pleasant Valley defeated Freedom for the first-time ever as the Bears won 25-23, 25-16, 25-20.

Bridget Lozier had a career high 10 blocks to lead the Bears' defense while Courtney Miller led the attack with 12 kills. Teammate Kiersten Griesback added 15 assists and 11 digs.

Pleasant Valley moves to 13-1 on the year.

Marian-Halifax

Marian swept Halifax, 25-15, 25-15, 25-11.

MaryKate Sherkness led the Fillies' attack with 19 kills. Teammates Grace Boyle and Sophie Myers added four and three kills respectively. Abby O'Donnell dished out 28 assists.

Marian is now 6-0 on the year.

Panther Vy.-No. Schuylkill

In Schuylkill League action, Panther Valley defeated North Schuylkill 26-14, 23-16, 25-14.

Richelle VanHorn had nine kills and three service points for the Panthers. Also playing well for PV were Macey Markovich (nine service points); Jamey Mikovich (five blocks, four kills); and Kelsey VanHorn (four kills, nine service points).

Weatherly-Williams Vy.

Williams Valley defeated Weatherly in a Schuylkill League match, 25-15, 25-22, 25-13.

Lindsey Douglas had three digs and two assists for Weatherly. Kristin Titus had four aces. Weatherly's record for the season is 0-9, 0-6 in Schuylkill League.

Williams Valley also won the JV game, 25-23, 25-10.

Mahanoy Area-Tamaqua

In a Schuylkill League match, Mahanoy Area defeated Tamaqua in four sets, 21-25, 25-10, 25-20, 25-20.

Devan Sweeney had three aces, seven kills, and three digs to lead the Raiders. April Donnon added six kills while Derrian Gulden chipped in eight service points and four kills.

Mahanoy Area's JV also won 2-0.

ES South-Lehighton

In Mountain Valley Conference action, Lehighton defeated East Stroudsurg South, 25-12, 25-18, 25-12.

Taylor Yurasits led Lehighton with 20 assists. Tiff Thompson (nine kills) and Jackie Jordan (seven aces, seven kills and two digs) also played well for the Indians.

In the JV game, Lehighton beat East Stroudsburg South, 25-16, 25-13.

Northwestern-PM West

Northwestern defeated Pocono Mountain West, 25-13, 25-22, 25-6, in a non-league match.

Jenny Von Holt led the Tigers with 11 kills. She got plenty of help from teammates Jordan Veppert (nine kills, four digs, seven aces); Trista Cunningham (nine kills, four aces); Mackenzie Hart (13 assists, three ace); and Sara Hufnagle (11 assists).

Northwestern also won the JV match, 25-15, 25-16.
