PTO news

The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization will meet Tuesday, April 9, in the Tamaqua Elementary School Library. Parents of the fifth-grade class will meet at 6 p.m., while the general membership will meet at 6:30 p.m.

Plans for the May 10 Olympic Day will be discussed. Anyone who is able to volunteer to help that day may contact Brandi Coleman for details.

Sorority news

Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met March 13 at Basile's Restaurant in Hometown. New officers for 2013-2014 were elected and include: Wanda Keefer, president; Lori Schmerfeld, vice president; Marie Umbriac, recording secretary; Sue Hummel, treasurer; and Donna Gerber, corresponding secretary.

The group finalized plans for the annual community Easter egg hunt.

Donna Sterling provided a program about pasta, treating members to different types of pasta selections.

The March 24 meeting was held at Knepper's Inn, Snyders, and included a Secret Sister gift exchange.

Mary Machay, service chairperson, reported on the success of the community egg hunt, detailing the costs and benefits. The chapter will send a thank-you letter to Tamaqua Borough Council for the use of the Buehler Memorial Park.

Helen Walters provided information on the Founder's's Day celebration event, which will be held April 24 in conjunction with the Pottsville sorority chapter. Walters is in charge of reservations.

Following the business session, members were treated to homemade candy, donated by Patti Confer, and brownies and gifts donated by Donna Gerber.

The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on April 10 at Two Kings Pizzeria, Hometown.

Older and bolder

The Salvation Army's Older and Bolder group is back in action, meeting every Wednesday at the Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St. Meetings include a light luncheon.

April meeting topics and guest speakers will include: April 10 Sarah Keene of the Alzheimer's Association; April 17, Tina Burns, whose topic will be "Understanding Your Medical Bills"; April 24, Peggy Grigalonis and "Memories of Lakewood."

Calvary Methodist

The Rev. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service Sunday in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school for all ages will be held at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the community Easter Cantata "It Is Finished" will be presented at 6:30 pm.

An hour of praise and prayer will be held at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.

Zion Lewistown

The Rev. Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion's Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school and Confirmation classes will meet at 9:15 a.m. These are earlier times than usual and become routine as of this Sunday.

The guild will meet at 7:30 p.m. on April 8, in the social hall.
