Facts about Pippin the Musical

The Broadway musical Pippin has been in the spotlight for just over four decades.

According to the official Pippin the Musical's website, "Pippin tells the story of a young prince on a death-defying journey to find meaning in his existence."

Since its opening performance at the Imperial Theater on Oct. 23, 1972, the production has won a number of awards and accolades. Here are some facts about Pippin.

• The show ran 1,944 times before closing on June 12, 1977.

• The music was composed by Stephen Schwartz, who also worked on the revival.

• Pippin's Broadway revival began on March 23, when the production began previews at the Music Box Theatre, and opened on April 25.

• Currently, the revival's cast stars include Matthew James Thomas as Pippin; Patina Miller as Leading Player; Andrea Martin as Berthe; Terrence Mann as King Charles; and Charlotte d'Amboise as Fastrada. Diane Paulus again directs, with circus choreography and acrobatics by Chet Walker and Gypsy Snider.

• Since opening on Broadway, the revival has won four Tony awards, including for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance of a Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical and Best Direction of a Musical.
