Belle of the ball

As the 2013 school prom season approaches, organizers and volunteers for "The Second Annual Community Belle of the Ball" event will be collecting gently used gowns, shoes and jewelry, which will then be distributed to girls feeling the financial pinch of today's economy.

The collection date is Feb. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mauch Chunk and Greenwood streets. Donors are asked to use the office entrance on Mauch Chunk Street.

Distribution will be held from 5-8 p.m. on March 1, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 2.

Last year's event provided 200 gowns to deserving young women, a "tremendous success" according to Gwen Evans, one of the organizers.
