The winter of my life

Published January 19. 2013 09:03AM

Dear Editor:

You know time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware at the passing years. But here it is the winter of our lives and it catches us by surprise. I remember well seeing my parents age and older people going through the years thinking those folks were years away from me. And that winter of my life was far away. I could not imagine what it would be like. And now as I enter the winter season of my life trying to prepare for the aches and pains, I wish I had done things that I've never done.

So, during the last storm I tried to be a kid again. No, I did not shovel snow or make a snow angel. But I took a chair out to the middle of the lawn. Stretched out with my feet and hands and watched the snow fall. It's amazing how in just a short time the lawn and trees were covered with snow. Adding to the delight the full moon created a glistening effect of the snow on the evergreens as it fell. The clean crisp air invigorating my lungs as I breathed. It was great! But what was the amazing part of the experience? As the snow landed on the branches, I realized they do not make a sound. Can you imagine that? Something so beautiful to watch as clean and crisp, with no two flakes the same, as it falls is silent. I recall as a kid going to bed and waking to see the snow covering everything. And I didn't hear a thing. The same is for today. Some things never change. It's what I think of as the "THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE."

Watching this winter scene has prepared me to enter the winter season of my life better prepared. After I was covered in snow, I dusted myself off and went in to the house, silent. Free of aches and pains, if but for a short time.
