School help

The Effort United Methodist Women group is collecting school supplies to be given to current Effort UMC food pantry clients and church members who have a need for assistance.

Sign up for school supplies will be the second and fourth Saturdays in July (July 13 and July 26) when the food pantry is open. The only distribution will be at the food pantry the second Saturday in August.

Although previously announced that families will only be assisted for eight lifetime visits, that policy has been changed to 12 lifetime visits.

VBS volunteers

Effort UMC will hold its Vacation Bible School Aug. 5-10. The church is seeking volunteers to help. Volunteers, whether an Effort UMC member or not, must have clearances.

Lions meet

The Western Pocono Lions Club will hold its board meeting, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 3, at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville. All Lions are welcome.

The monthly dinner meeting will take place Wednesday, July 17, at the Old Mill Pizza on Route 209 in Sciota. The gathering is at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7. The speaker will be a representative from Equilibrium.

Seniors meet

The Monroe County Seniors will next meet at Zion Lutheran on Friday, July 5, beginning at 9 a.m. The group gathers for fun, food and fellowship every Wednesday and Friday. On July 10, the program will be about Garden Fresh.

Offices closed

Many places will be closed in honor of the Fourth of July. Mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace, however, will be offered at 9 a.m., but not at noon.

UMW meets

Effort UMW will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, July 8, at the church in Effort. The program will be presented by Lindsey Vaughan, nutritionist from Kinsley's ShopRite in Brodheadsville. Devotions will be given by Dee Juris. Refreshments will be provided by Nita Nydam and Tonya Robinson.

Knit & Crochet

Zion Lutheran Church's Knit & Crochet group will meet at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 9.

Korean War Vets

The second Tuesday of the month, at 7 p.m., is the meeting time for the Korean War Veterans group which call the Gilbert Legion Post Home its meeting home. The group's next meeting is Tuesday, July 9.

Blood drive

The Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville will be the site of a Miller-Keystone blood drive from noon to 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 10. For an appointment or for more information call Deb Otto, (610) 691-5850, ext. 1227 or the Resource Department at 800-223-6667. Walk-ins are welcome.

Sorely needed are O-negative as well as AB+ and plasma.

Driver safety class

There will be a four-hour AARP Driver Safety class on July 20, being held at the Chestnuthill Park Building. Those taking this class must have proof of having taken the eight-hour class in the past three years.
