Warning sign exists at Glen Onoko

Dear Editor,

I just finished reading your column entitled "Glen Onoko Let the rescue season begin."

I've hiked that area many times and yes, it is quite hazardous to trek there. And yes, I have witnessed sheer stupidity on the Glen Onoko Trails.

You mentioned "Maybe warning signs could be installed alerting the dangers of the path to the falls, and educating people on what time of apparel and footwear should be worn."

Well, you must not have been there for quite some time, because as soon as you leave the parking lot to get on the trail, a rather large sign greets you. The sign certainly gives one a sense of caution and foreboding. It reads:

"WARNING

"GLEN ONOKO FALLS TRAIL. HIKE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

"SECTIONS OF THE TRAIL AHEAD ARE STEEP AND TREACHEROUS. HIKERS HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED AND KILLED AS A RESULT OF ACCIDENTAL FALLS FROM THE TRAIL AND GORGE OVERLOOKS. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SAFETY. WEAR PROPER HIKING SHOES.

USE EXTREME CAUTION WHILE HIKING IN THE GORGE S.G.L. 141."

But people will always feel they know better and push their luck.

Unfortunately common sense and experience are sadly lacking in many individuals who partake of such endeavors.

The tragedies will still occur and attempted legal action will ensue. And folks, that sign isn't just there for your entertainment.
