Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met March 14, at the Masonic Lodge in Hometown, with President Jean Machamer conducting the business session. The meeting was preceded by a Chinese auction and canned good collection.

Jacquie Patrick provided the St. Patrick's Day inspired invocation. Vice President Nancy Gerber and treasurer Antoinette Triano presented their reports. Penny Swartz and Leona Magnana were added to the sick list.

Upcoming dates include a trip to Knoebel's Grove on June 12 and the annual group picnic on Aug. 15. February and March birthdays will be celebrated at the March 28 meeting.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, located on SR54 (East) in Hometown.

Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.

YMCA news

The Tamaqua YMCA is accepting registrations for youth swim lessons and for a youth soccer skills clinic. For more information, or to register, call (570) 668-2903. Registration forms are also available at the Y welcome center, located in the former Jamesway Shopping Plaza.

Tax help

Tax return assistance is available for low income and senior residents of Schuylkill County through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, sponsored by Schuylkill Community Action. Volunteers are available to help low income residents between the ages of 25 and 65 with their federal, state and local returns.

VITA volunteers will be at the Lehigh Carbon Community College Morgan Center, 234 High St., every Wednesday from 5-7:15 p.m.

Older and bolder

The Salvation Army's Older and Bolder group is back in action, meeting every Wednesday at the Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St. Meetings will include a light luncheon

Joe Krushinsky of the American Cancer Society will be the guest speaker for the March 20 meeting. On March 27, activities will include a baby photo contest, games, trivia and distribution of the homemade Easter candy.

Calvary Methodist

The Rev. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service this Palm Sunday in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school for all ages will be held at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Sunday school class will present an Easter program, at 6:30 p.m., celebrating the Resurrection of Christ through skits, music, singing and more.

Holy Week services will include: March 28, Maundy Thursday service, 7:30 p.m., Calvary UMC; March 29, Good Friday, 1:30 p.m. at Zion United Methodist, New Ringgold; March 31, Easter Sunday, 6:45 a.m. sunrise service at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle, 614 Valley Rd.

Easter Sunday services will be held at 10:25 a.m. in Calvary UMC.

St. Peter's Union

The Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Palm Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The Sunday school class will meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class will meet at 11:30 a.m., Daisies, Brownies and Cub Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Activities for next week include: Monday, women's Bible study meets at 6 p.m.; Wednesday, youth group will decorate eggs at 6 p.m.; Thursday, Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m.; Good Friday service at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, egg hunt at 1 p.m.
