Lioness celebrate
The Western Pocono Lioness Club celebrated its three-prong August club meeting with a mini-fashion show courtesy of Dress Barn and manager Bonnie Fader. Club President Ruth Smith expressed her thanks to Fader for putting the show together, and to models Karen Heckman, Karoline Kormann, Ruth Hebron and Maryann Cloos.
The club also met one of its Monroe County Conservation Camp scholarship winners, Nina Giamblavo. She told members how much fun she had and how much she learned at the camp. Smith, who says this is a worthwhile project, hopes the club continues to send at least one, if not more, young people to it every year.
The club's annual Ice Cream Social was enjoyable and members learned they had won second place for their group exhibit display at the West End Fair.
The next board meeting noon, Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Cherry's Family Restaurant in Kresgeville. All members are welcome.
Monroe Seniors
The next meeting times for the Monroe Seniors at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville include: Friday, Sept. 6; Wednesday, Sept. 11; and Friday, Sept. 13. All meetings begin at 9 a.m..

250th Anniversary
Chestnuthill Township is celebrating 250 years this weekend. At its inception, Chestnuthill Township consisted of Polk, Ross, Eldred and the present Chestnuthill. The historical societies, townships, organizations, businesses, fire companies and residents are having a party and parade at the West End Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 8.
Festivities will include games, music, contests, displays, food and more.
Greyhound adoption

New beginnings
With the start of the new school year, Effort UMC announces its reopening of Sunday School classes, with the return of the Basement Bunch. That group, to be led the first Sunday, Sept. 8, by Steve Johnson, will be an interactive study group for adults, meeting from 9:45-10:30 a.m.
Also offered will be the following classes:
Teen Sunday School, starting Sept. 8 during the 11 a.m. service, for ages 13 and above;
Preteen Sunday School, starting Sept. 8 during the 11 a.m. service, for ages 9, 10, 11 and 12.
Body Building, starting Sept. 8 during the 11 a.m. service, after the children's message, for ages 3-8.
Adult Sunday School class meets in the library at 9:30 a.m. and is looking for a leader. All adults are invited.
Religious education
Our Lady Queen of Peace's Religious Education classes will begin Saturday, Sept. 7 through Tuesday, Sept. 10. For more information, contact the church at (610) 681-6139.
Rally Day
Zion Lutheran Church will hold its annual Rally Day on Sunday, Sept. 8. The morning begins with Sunday School at 9 a.m., a worship service at 10 a.m., brunch at 11 a.m., and a worship service at noon.
Busy Effort UMW
Effort United Methodist Women (UMW) hosted the annual church family picnic in August with close to 50 persons in attendance. The UMW also supplied multiple families with back packs and school supplies, with thanks to the congregation for its support of the program by donating some of the supplies.
The next UMW meeting is 7 p.m., Monday, Sept 9. Devotions will be provided by Arvilla Bodemer and the hostesses will be Bodemer, Ann Sanders and Reta Romanco. The program will be a business meeting with some discussion for nominations for officers, upcoming chicken barbecue, Cluster charge conference and the First Responders dinner.
All Sports Club
Pleasant Valley's All Sports Club will meet at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 9, in the high school library.
McMichaels UMC
Sunday worship begins at 9:30 a.m., with the Children's Sunday School beginning at 9:45 a.m. Communion is offered the first Sunday of the month and on the third Sunday of the month. The worship service format is a contemporary one.
Shoebox missions
Operation Christmas Child was an activity at the West End Fair that allowed visitors to pack shoe boxes for children ages 2-14. Various churches in the West End are also involved in the program, but at the fair, Kyle Dempsey and volunteers packaged 694 shoe box gifts, just shy of the 700 goal.
Operation Christmas Child celebrated its 20th year, and since 1993 OCC has collected and distributed 103,720,570 gifts to children in 113 countries. Dempsey is the Southern Pocono Area Coordinator and has served with Operation Christmas year-round for six years, with the past three years as area coordinator for Monroe, Carbon, Northampton and Pike counties.

Free concert
The West End Park & Open Space Commission and Chestnuthill Township will host an end of summer concert featuring Steel Creek Trio at the Chestnuthill Park, Route 715, Brodheadsville as part of the free summer concert series at 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 22.
Steel Creek performs popular music form the '60s all the way to current tunes in all genres of music, including pop, country and rock.
