Maundy Thursday events
Effort United Methodist Church will hold Holy Thursday's Soup & Bread in Wesley Hall at 6 p.m. and the Living Last Supper Service at 7:30 p.m.
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will offer Holy Thursday morning prayer at 8 a.m., but no Mass at 8 a.m.; a 7 p.m. Mass of the Lord's Supper, and an 11 p.m. Night Prayer.
Pleasant Valley Presbyterian, Brodheadsville, will hold a special Maundy Thursday service, beginning at 7 p.m. where worshippers will solemnly remember the Last Supper and the sacrifice of Jesus dying on the cross. There will be a time to nail one's sins to the cross at the end the service.
Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, will hold its Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m. including Holy Communion and the Stripping of the Altar.
Good Friday
Effort UMC will have a Service of Shadows at 7 p.m. There will be no contemporary worship service Saturday, April 19, between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Our Lady Queen of Peace will hold an 8 a.m. Morning Prayer, but no 8 a.m. Mass; no Eucharistic Adoration; and a 7 p.m. Celebration of the Lord's Passion.
Zion United Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, will have the church choir and friends present the cantata and Tenebrae service, "The Seven Last Days," by Joel Raney, at 7 p.m. Nancy Joy Koch will direct.
Holy Saturday
Our Lady Queen of Peace will hold an 8 a.m. Morning Prayer on Holy Saturday, but no 8 a.m. Mass, no Confessions nor 5 p.m. Mass; but at 8 p.m. Great Easter Vigil will be held.
A basket blessing will be held at 1 p.m., followed by an egg hunt at 2 p.m.
Easter Sunday
Effort UMC will hold a Sunrise service at 7 a.m., and traditional services at 8:30 and 11 a.m. celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
McMichaels UMC will hold its Easter worship at 9:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast to follow after worship.
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will celebrate Easter Mass on Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 8 and 10 a.m. and at noon.
A Spanish Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m.
Pleasant Valley Presbyterian will hold its Easter service at 10:15 a.m.
Zion Lutheran will hold services at 6 a.m., 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. There will be no Sunday School.
L.L. League meeting
West End Little League will hold a league meeting at 8 p.m., Thursday in the Chestnuthill Park Building. Managers and coaches are encouraged to attend. Parents and members of the league are welcome.
Spring recess
Pleasant Valley schools will dismiss early Thursday for spring recess and will reopen April 22.
Monroe Seniors
The Monroe Seniors will meet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville. Dolores Casalaspro, site manager, should be called at 570-992-2916 for meal reservations.
The group will also meet the week the following Wednesday and Friday, during the same hours. Dr. Del Vecchio, rheumatologist, will present a program on Arthritis, April 25, at Chestnuthill Senior Center.
Women's Club
The Western Pocono Women's Club will meet at 7 p.m., April 21, in Wesley Hall at Effort UMC. The speaker will be Trish Attardo, Watershed Specialist for the Monroe County Conservation District. She will be addressing the women's group about concerns related to the conservation of water resources.
Chestnuthill zoning
Chestnuthill Zoning Hearing Board is slated to meet at 7 p.m., Monday, April 21, at the township municipal building.
Republican Club
The next regular meeting of the West End Republican Club will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the Luna Rosso Restaurant in Gilbert. Those coming for the optional dinner should arrive by 6 p.m.
Senior Spelling Bee
The Monroe County Senior Spelling Bee will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 22 at the Eastern Pocono Public Library in the Edinger Community Room in Stroudsburg.
Any Monroe County resident 55 years of age or older can participate. First prize winner will receive $100 and the runner up will receive $50. For more information or to register call the Monroe County Aging Office at 570-420-3735
Lioness meet
The Western Pocono Lioness Club will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the American Legion Post home in Gilbert. There will be no program as election of officers for the 2014-2015 Lioness year will take place.
PVEN needs
The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network needs macaroni & cheese, pork & beans, peanut butter, jelly, tuna fish, cereal and side dishes (hamburger helper, tuna helper, etc.)
Donations may be dropped off at the center on McIlhaney Road and Greenview Drive in Brodheadsville from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays or by appointment by calling 570-992-3136.
Umpire Clinic
West End Little League will hold an umpire clinic at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 27, at the Effort softball field on Gilbert Road. Any manager or coach who didn't attend the first clinic needs to be there, according to Little League management.
Free composting class
Monroe County Waste Authority will hold free composting classes from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10; Saturday, June 14; and Saturday, Sept 13 at its site at 103 Commercial Boulevard, Blakeslee.
Classes will be taught by a Penn State Master Gardener.
Every attendee will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a composter.

Special program
Effort UMC is planning special services for Memorial Day weekend and invites the church family to submit names and photographs in memory of those from their family who were members of the nation's security forces (Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, National Guard, Coast Guard and Navy) who have gone on.
Driver refresher
Polk Township Fire Hall, Kresgeville, will be the site for a four-hour AARP Driver Safety course on Saturday, April 28. Participants must present proof of having taken the class during the past 36 months.
