Time to rethink controlled burns

Published April 28. 2014 08:48AM

Dear Editor,

I don't claim to be an expert on the subject, but I think the Game Commission needs to rethink the controlled burn. My suggestion is that the area should be harvested first.

Eighteen- to 22-inch diameter hardwoods are perfect for fireplaces and wood stoves. Soft woods will burn in outdoor furnaces to heat homes and garages. Some of the wood can be machined for lumber. If it is going to be burned anyway, why not utilize it for a purpose.

If it is determined that some of the wood is worthless, then leave that for the burn. Clear out the useful first, then burn it. There is a word for this, oh yeah, recycling! In a semi-cleared area, the burn should be easier to control. Let the harvesting companies bid on the work and determine what would be the best use for it. All the bark makes excellent mulch and many use and pay for it every year. Taxpayers would like the Game Commission to use their head on this one.
