Arts night
The Tamaqua Area Middle School Spring Art Show and Choral Concert will be held on May 8 in the middle school.
The art show will be held from 7-7:30 p.m. in the hallway outside of the auditorium. Students from sixth, seventh and eighth grades will have their art work displayed, including paintings, 3-D interiors, murals, sketches, masks, group projects, cultural art, tiles, watercolor, fashion design, collages and more. There is no entry fee for the art show.
The Spring Chorus Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the district auditorium. Performances will be offered by the Jazz Choral/Concert Choir and the Middle School Select and General Choruses.
Soup social
Monthly soup socials are being held at Trinity United Church of Christ, 22 Lafayette St. The next outreach social will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on May 3. The free event is part of Trinity's monthly "Feeding the Hungry" program.
Those attending are reminded to use the lower parking lot entrance into Founder's Hall.
Senior citizens
The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met April 24 with 56 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session and Jacque Patrick provided the invocation "A Path to Spring."
Reports were offered by secretary Ruth Ann Feane and treasurer Penny Schlorf. Dues for 2014 are still being accepted. Jayne Myers and Kathleen Valentine were added to the sick list.
The meeting concluded with cards and social games.
The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, located on Route 54 (east) in Hometown. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.
Day of prayer
Bethany Evangelical Congregational will be hosting a National Day of Prayer Event on May 1. This year's theme is "One Voice, United in Prayer." The event will be held at noon at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St. The public is welcome.
SS. Peter and Paul
First Friday will be observed this week in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. First Friday confessions will be heard at 7:30 a.m., followed by Mass and devotions at 8 a.m. Communion calls will begin at 9 a.m., with the exception of the Tamaqua ABC High Rise, Coaldale and Hometown. Communion calls to those parishioners will be made on Thursday.
May 3 will be a Fatima Saturday. Confessions will be heard at 7:30 a.m., followed by a Recitation of the Rosary and Devotions before the 8 a.m. Mass.
Members of the parish Holy Rosary Society will attend the 8 a.m. Mass on May 4 and receive Holy Communion as a group. A rosary will be said before the Mass.
