Middle school news

Christopher Czapla, principal of the Tamaqua Area Middle School has announced an orientation session for students new to the school will begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Parents of sixth-graders, as well as seventh- and eighth-graders new to the district, are welcome to attend.

Information will be presented on student schedules, activities, facilities and discipline.

Individuals will meet in the school district auditorium, then have the opportunity to tour the building accompanied by student guides. Information will be provided on student schedules and activities, facilities and discipline. For those unable to attend, orientation notes will be available on the middle school's website.

Homeroom assignments have been posted on the school's main door.

Board of Health

The Tamaqua Board of Health held its August meeting with Randolph Gormley, Shirley Becker, Earl Boettger, health officer Judith Hadesty R.N. and code enforcement officer Matt Meyers in attendance.

Meyers reported that 10 properties had the water shut off due to non-payment, making the homes unhabitable. A total of 57 health licenses were issued this year. Five places failed the health inspection and were denied licenses.

He also received and adjusted 15 complaints in July: five for animal waste and 10 for trash. There were no cases of reportable diseases for the month.

East end news

The East End Playground Association will hold an end of summer picnic/party on Friday. Activities will begin at 6 p.m. at the playground on Mountain Avenue.

There will be games, face painting and more for all ages.

Free acoustic music will be provided by "Toolshed Jack."

Calvary Methodist

All events connected with Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church, Lewistown Valley, are being held at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle, 614 Valley Road, through Labor Day weekend.

The Rev. Ed Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service this Sunday.

Also on Sunday, a time of praise, worship and fellowship will be held at 6:30 p.m.

The 101st Annual Camp Meeting will be held from Aug. 22 through Sept. 1. A complete list of activities is available at www.calvaryeum.yolasite.com.

St. John UCC

The Rev. Kevin Duffy Guy will officiate at the 9:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. John United Church of Christ.

The spiritual council will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
