Regionalize the police department

Published August 30. 2014 03:32PM

Dear Editor

In regard to the police department in Franklin Township, a resident has said he moved into the township because the township has a great police department.

I'd like to know where he came from, because I do not think he moved here only because of the police department. I believe he moved here to get away from the crime in the city or the suburbs. Unfortunately the crime in the city is also moving into the area.

If the township has to raise taxes for police protection, he could probably afford the increase, but what about the people on fixed incomes or the working-class family? Could they afford a tax increase to keep the police department?

Let's face it, sooner or later all the boroughs in this area will be facing this issue. When I was on borough council in Lansford, I brought this up at a shared services meeting with Coaldale Borough Council. They did not want to hear about it. Maybe times have changed since 2001.
