Advent breakfast
The Tamaqua High School Jazz Chorale will be the musical guest at the Fourth Annual Tamaqua Community Advent Breakfast on Dec. 13 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greenwood and Mauch Chunk streets.
It is sponsored by the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce, the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership and the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network.
The event begins at 9 a.m. and includes breakfast by Zion's Culinary Crew, music, an Advent message by the Rev. Virginia Goodwin, and candle lighting ceremony. Luminaria kits will be available.

Library news
The Tamaqua Public Library is preparing for the holidays, planning a children's Christmas party and offering the gift of reading through its holiday book sale.
The children's Christmas party will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the library. It is open to children up to age 5 and will include snacks, crafts, story time and a special visit. Donations are welcome.

The Christmas book sale begins Saturday. The library is open Mondays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Fridays, noon to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Bethany EC
The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. praise and thanks service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school will meet at 9:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the Northeast District Advent Hymnsing will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Bethany.

Street sweeping
Weekly street sweeping in Tamaqua has been discontinued. The schedule will resume in spring 2015. Streets will be posted and notices will be placed in the Times News.

Kettle drive
The Tamaqua Salvation Army's annual Christmas Kettle Campaign needs volunteers willing to spend two or more hours ringing the bells at designated kettle locations. Funds collected are used to support local needy residents.

Cookie contest
Cookie lovers are invited to take part in the Spirit of Christmas Cookie Contest. Cookie entries will be judged in four categories: drop, bar, decorated and filled cookies.
Baked entries are to be taken to the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce Office, 114 W. Broad St., between 2 and 3 p.m. Saturday. Two dozen cookies are needed for each entry. Judging will be done at 3 p.m.
Winners will be announced at the tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. Sunday in Depot Square Park.
