Artist reception

The Tamaqua Community Art Center will sponsor a meet and greet reception for artist Irene Miller from 6 to 9 p.m., July 24, at the center, 125 Pine St., Tamaqua.

Miller is from Hazleton and works in the water color medium. Her work has been displayed at Hazleton's "Fist Night" event and at the restaurant in the Hazleton Boscov's.

In addition to the meet and greet, Miller will be teaching a class at the art center on Aug. 7.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met July 8 at the Ryan Township Fire Company, Barnesville, with 50 members in attendance. The business session was conducted by President Eleanor Schmerfeld.

Reports were offered by secretary Ruthann Feane and treasurer Shirley Becker.

Birthday greetings were offered to Dolores Walck, Shirley Becker, Margaret Miller, Mary Taylor and Gloria Gerhard. Jim Valentine was added to the sick list.

Upcoming events were discussed, including a picnic on July 22 at St. Peter's Grove and a trip to the Bloomsburg Fair on Sept. 22.

The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, at the fire company.

Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.

Middle school news

Christopher Czapla, principal of the Tamaqua Area Middle School has announced an orientation session for students new to the school will be held Aug. 18, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Parents of sixth-graders, as well as seventh- and eighth-graders new to the district, are welcome to attend.

Information will be presented on student schedules, activities, facilities and discipline.

Individuals will meet in the school district auditorium, then have the opportunity to tour the building accompanied by student guides.

Homeroom assignments will be posted on the school's front/main door as of Aug. 4.

VBS

Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church will host a free Vacation Bible School from 6 to 8:30 p.m., July 21 through July 25. Classes are for children age 3 through 12th grade.

Activities will include games, skits, prizes, snacks and Bible-based stories geared to each age group.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. each night and ending services will be at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Calvary Methodist

All events connected with Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church, Lewistown Valley, are being held at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle, 614 Valley Road, through Labor Day weekend.

The Rev. Ed Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service this Sunday.

Also on Sunday, a time of praise, worship and Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.

The "Dixie Melody Boys" will perform a concert at 7 p.m. on July 25 at the tabernacle. The public is welcome to attend.
