Summer concerts

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing to celebrate the eighth year of its popular free Summer Concert Series. The concerts are held on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station throughout the summer season.

The first concert will be held from 6-8 p.m. on June 5, featuring Jay Smar.

Other concerts include: June 19, Steve Brosky and Jimmy Myers (acoustic blues); June 26, Livie and Shane (acoustic folk); July 3, Fraser Thomas (acoustic jazz, blues and pop); July 10, Carol Tempest (oldies); July 17, Shannon Miedaner Marsyada (acoustic classic rock and blues); July 24, Gene Morrison Family and Friends (oldies and folk); July 31, Christopher Dean Band (rhythm and blues); Aug. 7, Todd Wolfe Band (classic rock "bluesadelic"); Aug. 21, BC Combo (blues); Aug. 28, Coal County Express (bluegrass); Sept. 4, Fred Douglas (oldies).

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met May 15 with 62 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session. Jacque Patrick provided the invocation, "The Immigrant's Mother."

The next meeting will include a memorial service, honoring members who passed away in 2013. Refreshments will be served.

Vouchers for the Seniors Farmers Market Nutrition Program will be distributed from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on June 5 at the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, located on Route 54 (east) in Hometown. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional service Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. A contemporary service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Tamaqua YMCA, including nursery and primary church. Sunday school classes, for all ages, will meet at 9:15 a.m. at the church.

Also on Sunday, the Christian education commission will meet at 11:45 a.m. at the YMCA; the care and connections commission, the operations commission and the outreach commission will all meet at 12:30 p.m. at the church.

Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, painting day begins at 8:30 a.m., musician rehearsal at 8:30 a.m., praise practice at 9 a.m.

The national conference will be held from May 28 to May 30 at Messiah College.

SS. Peter and Paul

The annual Mass for graduating members of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will be celebrated at 8 a.m. on June 1. Graduates planning to attend are asked to notify the rectory, at 570-668-1150, by Saturday.

Coaldale

Coaldale will hold the first of three community yard sales on Saturday, June 14. Yard sales will also be held on July 12 and Aug. 9.

There will be a $10 charge to rent space from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Coaldale Complex
