Street sweeper
Winter must be right around the corner as weekly street sweeping operations in Tamaqua have been discontinued. The schedule will resume in spring of 2015. Streets will be posted and notices will be placed in the Times News to notify the public.
For more information, call Tamaqua Borough Hall at 570-668-3444. The office is open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Jazz Chorale
The Tamaqua High School Jazz Chorale will be the special musical guest at the Fourth Annual Tamaqua Community Advent Breakfast, which will be held Dec. 13.
Sponsored by the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce, the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership and the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network, this year's event will be held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greenwood and Mauch Chunk streets.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. and will include breakfast by Zion's Culinary Crew, special music, an Advent message provided by the Rev. Virginia Goodwin and a candle lighting ceremony. Luminaria kits will be available.
The event is modeled after a 49-year tradition held in Bethlehem.

Self-defense
The McCann School of Business and Technology's Pottsville campus will host a free self-defense class from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The class is open to the public and will include basic self-defense moves taught by a martial arts specialist.
The campus is located at 2650 Woodglen Road, Pottsville.
Zion Lewistown
Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at this Sunday's 10:30 a.m. service in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, boxes for Operation Christian Child will be collected after the service.
Bible study classes are held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Also next Thursday, the Confirmation class and the consistory will all meet at 6:30 p.m.
Bethany EC
The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. services Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school will meet at 9:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the outreach commission will meet at 10:30 a.m. and the care/connection, Christian education and operations commission will all meet at 11:45 a.m.
Activities for next week include: Monday, messy stuff for teens meets at 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m., Good News Club meets at 3:34 p.m. at the South Ward Playground; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m., GriefShare meets at 7 p.m.; Saturday, musician rehearsal at 8:30 a.m., praise practice at 9 a.m., couples study group meets at 6 p.m.
