Many bumps in our roads

Published October 11. 2014 09:00AM

Dear Editor,

I don't want to use the word "fan," so I'll use "reader."

One of your "readers" who always thanks me for my letters told me the other day it is time again to hear from "the old agitator!"

Well, I don't mean to be an agitator, but as I drove around these past three weeks, I encountered quite a few bumps in our highways.

PennDOT leads the way, and is followed closely by East Penn Township.

After bumping along, I thought to myself, "Gee, I wonder what those people think that live right there at the bump?" Some reside quite close to the edge of the roadway.

One in particular is on the Lehighton bypass. An old friend of mine lives along there and as I saw and chatted with him I heard what sounded like a truck coming into the building (which actually happened not too long ago) while passing. I asked, "How in the world do you sleep at night?"

"That's only one; there are two bumps right near each other; if one doesn't jar you awake, the other one will," he complained.

The other is on West Bowmans road where a drainpipe had collapsed several months ago, and left quite a dip in the roadway. One needs to almost stop to avoid damage to the car.

There too, the house is only a few feet from the shoulder of the roadway. (Note: Someone threw a little dirt in the indentation to solve the problem rather than remove the collapsed pipe!)

Perhaps someone can fill me in on a phone number to report the other sleep robbers.

Sincerely yours,

Richard M. Gross
