Church celebrates anniversary
McMichaels UMC is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Bishop Peggy A. Johnson, the United Methodist Bishop for the Northeastern Methodist District, will be visiting and presenting the children's sermon and adult sermon at the 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday. Holy Communion will be served by the bishop and the Rev. Ron Schane, who is escorting her. Coffee and doughnuts will be served after the worship.
Other activities and special speakers will follow on the next three Sundays. All activities are open to the public. For more information call the church at 570-629-1136 or the pastor at 610-597-1030.
In addition to this special celebration, McMichaels UMC has collected shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child in November. The church has over 140 boxes that are to be filled with school supplies, toys, shoes, socks, and more for this mission, which will be sent to various needy places worldwide.
During September the church family will be wrapping the shoe boxes and filling them.
Choral news
Pleasant Valley Choral Society, an adult community chorus, has announced that the group will be donating portions of the ticket sales of the holiday and spring Pops concerts to VALOR, a local public charity focused on veteran's issues.
Rehearsals for Sounds of the Season 2014 began last week. Prospective new members are invited to informal auditions at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Rehearsals are held every Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church on Route 209 in Brodheadsville. For more information call Mark at 570-402-2026.

Legion meetings
The West End Home Association is scheduled to meet this evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Legion Post home in Gilbert.
The American Legion meets on the first Thursday of the month, also at 7:30 p.m.; the auxiliary meets at 6 p.m. the second Monday of the month and the Korean War vets meet at 7 p.m., the second Tuesday of the month, Sept. 9.
Lions board
The board of directors for the Western Pocono Lions Club will meet at 7 o'clock tonight at the Western Pocono Community Library. All Lions are welcome.
Rotary speaker
The West End Rotary Club will host Eileen Petrillo as speaker at its breakfast meeting Thursday. The club meets at 7:30 a.m. at the Western Pocono Community Library.
PVEN board
The board of directors for the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network will meet at Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, at 9 a.m. Thursday.
PV Band Parents
The September meeting of the PV Band Parents will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the PVHS Band Room.
PVI activities
The fourth-grade open house and book fair will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. The fifth-grade open house and book fair will be held on Tuesday and the sixth-grade open house and book fair will follow on Sept. 11.
Greyhound adoption

Red Cross blood drive

Zion's Rally Day
The Sunday School Rally Day at Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, will be held this Sunday, beginning at 9:15 a.m., with a Bible scavenger hunt, as well as singing and snacks. A covered dish social will follow the 10:30 worship service.
The worship schedule changes to now include a 5 p.m. service, on Saturday and the Sunday worship being held at 8 and 10:30 a.m., weekly, beginning with this Sunday.
The sacrament of Holy Communion will be served at all worship services.
Lioness board
The next board meeting of the Western Pocono Lioness Club is noon on Sept. 10, at Cherry's Family Restaurant in Kresgeville. All members are welcome.
Lions recognition
Lions 14U District Gov. Sharon Kimmel attended the Western Pocono Lions Club's August dinner meeting and presented milestone years of membership certificates. Recognized were Robert Argot and Charles Rush, both with 25-year memberships, and Brendan Dohn, with a 10-year membership.
Church picnic
Effort UMC is holding its Annual Church Family Picnic at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 14. This UMW-sponsored picnic is open to the church family and friends. The UMW will provide the hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages. The church is asking that members or friends who are joining the event bring a side dish, salad or dessert and to sign up on a sheet in the narthex so the church will have an idea of how many will be attending.
Volleyball games
The Effort UMC Pavilion will host open play volleyball games (not league play) at the pavilion for anyone wishing to have some fun and fellowship. The games will be played through September and October.
