9-11 service
The Tamaqua South Ward Playground will once again sponsor a 9-11 Community Remembrance Service, honoring those lost that fateful day, the military personnel who protect our freedom, and their families.
The event will be held at 6 p.m. at the playground, located at Penn and Oak streets. There will be a special tribute to the late John "Sonny" Trudich, a long time supporter of the event.
Garden club
The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its August meeting at the Zion Church social hall in the Lewistown Valley. President Kathy McGee conducted the business session. Prayers were offered on behalf of members and their families, who were fighting illness.
McGee provided a program on sea glass and presented each member in attendance with a sample. Members were then able to hand craft individual ornaments.
The arrangement category for this meeting was "Wild Flowers and Greens." Mary Bridygham took first place honors, with Evelyn Adams placing second and Carol Kohn taking third place.
Any blooming flower fell into the specimen category. First place went to Evelyn Adams and her dahlia; while everyone else was named second place winners due to the high quality and beauty of the specimens presented.
The annual dinner meeting is scheduled for Oct. 28 at the Normal Square Inn. Reservations are required.
Senior citizens
The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met Sept. 4 with 66 members in attendance. New member Ruth Nester was given a warm welcome.

Flu shots are scheduled for noon on Sept. 11, provided by Rite Aid. This week's meeting will also include an election of officers.
The meeting concluded with cards and social games.
