Cancer by the numbers

In 2012 the National Cancer Institute spent 4.16 percent, or $208.1 million, of its $5.07 billion budget on pediatric cancer research.

NCI funds research for 23 different types of cancer, with the greatest amount going to breast cancer.

Here is a list of the top 10 disciplines that are funded.

Breast cancer: $602.7 million

Lung cancer: $314.6 million

Prostate cancer: $265.1 million

Colorectal cancer: $256.3 million

Leukemia: $234.7 million

Pediatric cancer: $208.1 million

Brain and central nervous system cancer: $177.5 million

Lymphoma: $135.1 million

Melanoma: $121.2 million

Ovarian cancer: $111.7 million
