Day of prayer

Bethany Evangelical Congregational will be hosting a National Day of Prayer Event on May 7. This year's theme is "Lord, Hear Our Cry," based on 1 Kings 8:28.

A bill establishing the National Day of Prayer was signed in 1952 by U.S. President Harry S. Truman, to be set each year by the sitting president. In 1988, the law was amended, establishing the first Thursday in May for the observance.

Tamaqua's event will be held at noon at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St. The public is welcome to attend.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met April 14 at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville with 58 members in attendance.

The business session was conducted by President Eleanor Schmerfeld. Kathleen Valentine provided an inspirational reading, "Help Me Lord."

Judy Mogish was added to the sick list. Dolores Walck and Linda Yumes was welcomed back after short absences. Birthday greetings were extended to Shirley Shellhammer and Paul Randig.

The anniversary dinner will be held May 26. Payment is now due.

Refreshments and social games were enjoyed after the business meeting. The group meets at 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the fire company. The next meeting will be held Tuesday. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service this Shepherd Sunday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Sunday school classes are held at 10:30 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class will meet at 10:30 a.m. and the Allegro Bell Choir will rehearse at noon.

Activities for next week include: Thursday, angel choir rehearses at 6 p.m., shepherd choir meets at 6:30 p.m., chancel choir practices at 7:30 p.m.
