Book club

A new book discussion club, the Bucket List Club, is being formed in the Tamaqua area. The group will meet once a month, with the first meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St.

The first book to be discussed will be "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. The novel is set in a sleepy southern town which has to deal with a crisis. First published in 1960, it became an instant best-seller and classic. Lee won a Pulitzer Prize for the novel in 1961. It was later made into an Academy Award winning movie.

Christmas trees

The Borough of Tamaqua's Street Department will be collecting discarded Christmas trees throughout January. Residents are to place their trees curbside on regular trash collection days.

Trees will be collected as time and weather permit.

Trees must be free of all tinsel and decorations. Residents are also asked to remove any plastic bags from the trees.

Trees may also be dropped off behind the Tamaqua Borough Garage at 421 rear E. Broad St.

No trees will be collected after Jan. 31.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service Sunday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Sunday school class will meet at 10:30 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class will meet at 10:30 a.m. and the bell choir will rehearse at noon.

Activities for next week include: Thursday, shepherd choir meets at 6:30 p.m., finance committee meets at 6:30 p.m.

Calvary Evangelical

The Rev. Ed Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes are at 9:15 a.m.

Also this Sunday, a Bible study session based on the book of Jonah will be held at 6:30 p.m.

An hour of praise and prayer is held Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Call 570-668-9111 for directions.

On Feb. 1, in conjunction with Souper Bowl Sunday, canned goods will be collected for local food banks.

St. John UCC

The Rev. Kevin Duffy Guy will officiate at the 9:30 a.m. worship service Sunday in St. John United Church of Christ. The service will include Holy Communion. Sunday school begins at the end of the junior sermon.

Also on Sunday, a time of fellowship and choir rehearsal will be held following the worship service.

On Tuesday, there will be a Bible study session at 6:30 p.m. and bell choir rehearsal at 7:30 p.m.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at this Sunday's 10:30 a.m. service in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will be held at 9:15 a.m.

Also this Sunday, the annual congregational meeting will be held immediately following the worship service, compete with a covered dish meal.

Bible study sessions are held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Also on Thursdays, the Conformation class meets at 6:30 p.m.
