More help to keep those resolutions

Published January 26. 2015 04:00PM

Following everyone's favorite season, "the season of giving," comes everyone's least favorite, "the season of I'm-done-with-these-resolutions-already."

Studies show that within a month, almost half of all New Year's resolutions have already fizzled out.

That's why the experts at Taste of Home America's largest cooking magazine have come up with a simple list of goals and ideas that can change your life without sacrificing time, money or happiness.

Here are some examples:

• Start eating breakfast. Trust us, there's time! Make top-speed treats like Bacon Breakfast Cups (http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/bacon-breakfast-cups), and then pop them in the fridge to grab for breakfast all week long.

• Make veggies more fun. Roasting transforms veggies into an awesome snack: carrot sticks become fun fries, and cauliflower with a little Parmesan becomes popcorn-y bites.

• Put it on paper (or a Pinterest-worthy framed chalkboard). If you resolved to eat more meals at home this year, having a plan is really important. Create a weekly dinner template so it's easy to plug in ideas each week.

• Drive home, not through. Costs mount quickly. On average, a family of four spends $20 to $25 on a fast-food meal. Fix the same burgers at home and you'll spend less than $10.

• Eat to sleep. If you really need a bedtime snack, reach for a food that's full of vitamin B6 to help amp up your body's sleep-inducing serotonin. Think a banana or red bell pepper strips with hummus.

• Plan to can. Take a canning and preserving class now, so when gardens are loaded you can put every last berry, tomato and cucumber to good use. Check your town's park and rec department or local university extension for a schedule.

• Try new foods or revamp your pantry. Pack your pantry with good-for-you ingredients like whole wheat flour, whole wheat pastry flour, oats, unsweetened applesauce (which is great for replacing some of the fat in your favorite cakes and quick breads), quinoa, and nut butters. Then introduce your family to them one at a time.

• Go meatless for some meals. Fill up on veggies and grains on meat-free Mondays. Start your family off with something they already love, like lasagna, and layer it with veggies like butternut squash, zucchini and red peppers.

• Treat yourself to a superfood sundae. Boost the benefits of already-awesome frozen yogurt with your favorite toppings blueberries, walnuts and (yup) dark chocolate.

• Start a soup swap. Invite your friends and neighbors to bring their favorite homemade soups. Then, you can all go home with a few different kinds for tomorrow's dinner, plus enough to fill your freezer.
