Protect the right to bear arms

Published July 03. 2015 04:01PM

The right to bear arms has been regulated into a privilege granted by government by political scrutiny and attack.

As a believer in the rule of law, I find the language of the laws that govern my right encumbering. If I have a right to life, then I have the right to protect my life.

When I am confronted by someone or something that threatens my life, I am the first responder. The police and government agencies are, at best, second responders to violent crime.

The police investigate crime after it has taken place. The only thing that stops a bad man with a gun is a good man with a gun.

Government and its laws are applied after an illegal act occurs. Laws are words on paper that had no power to stop the murder of nine people in South Carolina.

Self-defense is an individual responsibility; calling 911 won't stop an attacker. Too many people have abdicated this personal responsibility.

When our culture reinforces duty to self and our fellow man, we the people will have the power to make a huge difference in situations like the South Carolina murders.
