Feedback on Palmerton school plans

Published July 11. 2015 09:00AM

Dear Editor,

I really have to hand it to the Palmerton School Board. They sure are smart. They announce, less than 24 hours before their feedback meeting on their $21 million spending plans, that they are having the meeting. They hold it at supper time on a work day, and neglect to mention where it will be held.

I will give you my feedback now. Don't borrow money for a wish list. Wish list means it is not a necessity.

Yes, interest rates are low, but the economy is stumbling along like a drunken sailor. No offense to sailors or drunks.

Artificial turf would be nice, but you still need grounds equipment and crewmen for all the rest of the school grounds. There will be no measurable savings over time. Some special equipment will have to be purchased just for the fake turf.

Why do we need another cafeteria after all these years? Don't even try the student population increase argument.

Another cafeteria means all new kitchen equipment and staff. Find a way to add on to or make the existing cafeteria work. Maybe a little more staff or equipment. You are there to find the way.

Finally the air conditioning situation.

If it's needed, then it's needed. We all know how much real school work gets done in May and June. Poker anyone?

Bottom line is that the only people who think the economy is improving are the Palmerton School Board members and Obama.

Until there is a measurable economic improvement by any reputable experts, teach the children of the district a lesson in fiscal responsibility. Please, can we get our superintendent of schools to find another school district to help?
