Library news

The Tamaqua Public Library will be as busy as a beehive this summer, with numerous activities, book club meetings and fundraisers on the schedule.

The summer reading group for teens and young adults, ages 12 to 19, began Friday and will be held every other Friday until Aug. 21. Times will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The theme will be to "Unmask" the heroes within everyone. Incentives will be offered for reading and volunteering.

The summer reading program for children between the ages of 2 and 12, "Every Hero Has A Story," will be offered on different days and times in order to reach the most readers. This program will begin the week of June 22 and continue through July 27.

For ages 6 to 12, sessions will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays.

For the younger group, ages 2 to 5, sessions will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Each session will feature stories, snacks, crafts and games. There will also be prizes awarded for reading.

The adult book discussion group's next meeting will be at 6 p.m. June 29. This month's selection is "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt.

A beef/stuffed chicken platter fundraiser is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. July 16, and the annual book/bake sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 1.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met June 11 at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St. The meeting was attended by 66 members. Three new members were added to the group: Sandy Bonner, Beverly Richards and Nancy Moser.

President Melody Weicker conducted the business session, and secretary Ruthann Feane provided the inspirational reading, "Friendship."

Eleanor Schmerfeld and Winnie Dolan were added to the sick list.

Upcoming activities will include: farmers market vouchers to be distributed today at the Tamaqua Salvation Army; annual summer picnic on Aug. 13 at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club; and flu shots to be given in September.

The group meets at 1 p.m. every Thursday. The next meeting will be on June 18.

Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The YMCA is handicap accessible.

CPR training

St. John United Church of Christ, 150 Pine St., is hosting a CPR certification class on June 25. The class will begin at 5 p.m.

Seating is limited. To register, contact Ben Shafer at 570-778-1044.

There is a fee to cover the cost of training material.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school will meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Ministry Council will meet at 11:45 a.m.

Activities for next week include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, sew much more growth group meets at 10 a.m., Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, growth group motorcycle ride at 10 a.m.
