Generous donation

The West End Fire Company of Brodheadsville thanks Girl Scout Troop 50394 Juniors for gathering stuffed animals for around the community as part of the Scouts Bronze award.

Approximately 1,500 were donated to the West End Fire Company to be distributed to children involved in accidents, fires or other types of emergencies.

A huge thank you to the Girl Scouts for completing this project, company member Ray Achey said.

Free chalk talk

Mrs. Bush's, Kunkletown, is offering a free Snyder Chalk Talk presentation at 2 p.m. today. The Snyder Chalk Talk illustrates a biblical message using God-given abilities to draw and sing. Special chalk, elaborate lighting and Christian music are used to share the Gospel Truth in a unique and memorable way. The message through this medium captures the hearts of young and old alike.

Lion recognized

The Western Pocono Lions Club will meet at 7 tonight at the Old Mill Pizza Restaurant in Sciota. The evening will include the annual installation of officers and the awarding of the Lion of the Year will take place.

Zion Seniors

The Senior Citizen's Group for those 50 years and older will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville. Bring a sandwich. Beverages are provided. The group does have a small membership fee.

Monroe seniors

The group of Monroe County Seniors, known as the Chestnut Hill Seniors, will meet Friday in Zion Lutheran's Fellowship Hall beginning at 9 a.m. The menu is stuffed cabbage rolls. At next Wednesday's gathering the lunch will be chef salad with chicken.

On Wednesday a special program, Berry, Berry Good, will be presented at 11 a.m.

Attendees wanting lunch are reminded to call the site manager by 11 a.m. one day ahead of time to reserve a meal.

Church flea market

Our Lady Queen of Peace church is holding its flea market for three days, beginning Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and continuing Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. rain or shine.

Church staff and volunteers say there is something for everyone and includes vendors, crafters and yard sales on the front lawn of the church, including a giant tent of baseball cards.

Registration extended

Due to some available spaces at the Eldred Township community yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 27, the registration has been extended to Saturday.

Park walk

The West End Park and Open Space Commission is sponsoring a Walk in the Ross Township Park, Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg at 9 a.m. Saturday. There is time to learn about the history of the old VanBuskirk Farm, recreation opportunities and Open Space initiatives.

Kids will have the opportunity to decorate a barbecue apron for a father figure from 10 a.m. to noon. They will get everything they need to make something special to take home.

From 1-4 p.m. adults are invited to a wine tasting event at the Blue Ridge Winery, Blue Ridge Road, to benefit the future leash-free dog park. There is a cost.

Blood drive

Getz Personal Care Home, Route 534 in Jonas, is hosting a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Scholarships awarded

The two Western Pocono Lions Club scholarships have been awarded to Pleasant Valley High's Zoe Bartolacci and Chantelle Lutz.

Community festival

The West End Fire Company on Route 715 in Brodheadsville will host a community festival Saturday.

It will include tug-o-war, horseshoe tournaments, music/Karaoke Kids, entertainment, burgers, fries, hot dogs, sausage, beer (must be over 21), clams, etc.

On site will be West End Ambulance, the VALOR Clinic, Chestnuthill Township EMA, Monroe County 911 safety trailer and various craft vendors.

The community is invited to bring a chair and enjoy the day.

West End Wings

The 37th annual Father's Day radio-controlled air show will be held from 12:30-4 p.m. Sunday at the West End Wings airfield off Effort Neola Road. Free admission.

The rain date is June 28.

Summer schedule

Salem-St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kresgeville will begin with its summer worship schedule this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. The service will include Holy Communion and honoring dads.

Grads recognized

Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville will recognize its graduates this Sunday.

Outdoor service

St. Matthew's UCC church in Kunkletown will hold its service in the grove at 10 a.m.

There will also be a strawberry festival and car show that day.

The Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company will be holding its annual carnival in the grove from Tuesday through Saturday.

Polk supervisors

The Polk Township Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the township's municipal building on Polk Township Road in Kresgeville.

Knit & Crochet

The busy hands of knitters and crocheters at Zion Lutheran will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Tennis lessons

Session 2 of the West End Park & Open Space Commission tennis lessons at the Pleasant Valley Middle School courts starts Tuesday and will continue for six weeks. Munchkin Tennis, for 6 to 7 years old, will play Tuesdays from 4:15-5 p.m.

Ages 12 and under will play Tuesdays from 5-6:30 p.m.

Ages 13 to 16 will be Tuesdays from 6:30-8 p.m. and those 14 to 18 years will play Thursdays from 5-6:30 p.m.

Adults will play on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m.

Officer installation

The Western Pocono Lioness Club will have its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion on Route 209 in Gilbert. The new slate of officers will be installed.

The community is invited to come and enjoy a piece of cake, a cup of coffee and to meet the new officers.

West End GOP

The next regular meeting of the West End Republican Club will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cherry's Family Restaurant in Kresgeville.

The optional dinner is at 6 p.m.

Special guests

On June 24 at 1 p.m., as part of the Summer Reading Program, the Western Pocono Community Library will welcome Kathy Uhler and friends from the Pocono Wildlife and Rehabilitation Center. The theme for the Summer Reading Program this year is Every Hero Has a Story, and heroes come in all shapes, sizes and jobs.

Coloring contest

The Western Pocono Lioness Club will again host its free Patriotic Coloring Contest for children. It will take place from 1-3 p.m. June 27 at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville.

Activities include crafts, coloring, write a letter to a soldier and getting free ice cream and cookies.

Summer concert

The West End Park and Open Space Commission continues the summer concert series with Christina Lenway and Doug Kaetz together in concert at the Chestnuthill Township Park, 221 Route 715, Brodheadsville from 5-7 p.m. June 28. The music includes contemporary favorites and original tunes.

There will be free ice cream sundaes.

Participants are asked to bring a lawn chair, blanket and bug spray, and enjoy an evening in the park.

Special Mass

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will hold an Anointing of the Sick Mass at 11 a.m. June 30.

All are welcome. A light luncheon will follow Mass.

Veterans' speaker

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs of Monroe County will be speaking at Mrs. Bush's Personal Care Homes Inc. in Kunkletown at 6 p.m. July 8.

This speaking engagement will only be covering information regarding the veteran and widow pension. RSVP to Carrie Shafer at 610-381-1009 if you are interested in attending.

Veterans Affairs can help veterans and their spouses receive supplemental income for those who are housebound or who need additional care. Aide and attendance can be offered to a veteran or their spouse under the following conditions:

You require the aid of another person in order to perform personal functions required in everyday living, such as bathing, feeding, dressing, attending to the wants of nature, adjusting prosthetic devices, or protecting yourself from the hazards of your daily environment

You are bedridden, in that your disability or disabilities requires that you remain in bed apart from any prescribed course of convalescence or treatment

You are a patient in a nursing home due to mental or physical incapacity

Your eyesight is limited to a corrected 5/200 visual acuity or less in both eyes; or concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 degrees or less.

Wartime (period of service) veteran. Benefit is income-based.

If your loved one is a veteran or a spouse of a veteran and you are in need of placing them into a personal care home, assisted living, or skilled facility, join the event for more information. Light refreshments will be served.

Open mike night

Western Pocono Community Library will be hosting its first Open Mike Night on July 8, beginning at 6 p.m.

Since this is the first event, the library is looking for preregistration from the acts. Forms can be obtained at the library by emailing WPCL6@ptd.net or by calling the library at 570-992-7934. This event is open to all ages and talent levels and will celebrate local talent.
