Two are hurt in I-80 collision

Published November 03. 2015 04:00PM

Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 24 on Interstate 80 westbound in Tobyhanna Township.

State police at the Fern Ridge barracks said the drivers of the vehicles, John T. Holmes, 72, of Gates Mills, Ohio, and Alcibiades C. Espinal, 56, of Hazleton, suffered injuries of unknown severity.

Police said the incident happened when a 2004 Lexus LS 430 operated by Holmes attempted to enter the right travel lane of the interstate and it clipped the rear bumper of a 1994 Nissan Maxima driven by Alcibiades. Police said the Maxima began to travel off the left side of the roadway, spun counterclockwise and struck a tree with its rear bumper.

Upon clipping the rear of the Maxima, Holmes' Lexus rolled over as it began to go off the right side of the roadway, coming to rest in a ditch off the right side of the interstate.

Police said both vehicles sustained disabling damages and were required to be towed from the scene.
