Is your vehicle winter ready?
The mild November weather has been welcomed by all. Even with the hint of frost on windshields in the early hours, it’s been so-far-so-good compared to the harsh weather people have come to expect in late autumn.
Most folks focus on their homes when it comes to winter preparedness, often neglecting their road-traveling shelter.
Just like houses, vehicles must be winterized before the snow starts to fall. A few simple checks and refills before the freezing temps take hold will keep a car running smoothly.
Tires are at the top of the list when it comes to winter drivability. A worn-out set is dangerous in all conditions, especially with winter’s notorious snow, freezing rain and black ice hazards.
“I tell people all-season tires are great for all seasons, but winter tires are the experts in their field,” Scott Matejicka, tire manager at Firestone Complete Auto Care in Nazareth.
A home check can help gauge when tire changes are needed. Look for uneven wear or shallow treads. Check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks and check tire pressure often.
Make sure to let the tires “cool down” before checking the pressure for an accurate reading. Be careful not to neglect the spare in the trunk and make sure the jack is in good working condition.
When in doubt, bring the vehicle in to have an expert check.
“Some people don’t realize that there are different treads and tires wear unevenly,” Matejicka said.
With the advancement in technology, tire chains are a thing of the past.
“Some of the compounds found in modern winter tires enhance grip, even on ice,” he said.
Wheel checks are just part of the winter list.
Windshield wiper blades should be switched every season. If streaks are left behind while wipers are in use, it’s time for a new pair.
Always keep extra windshield washer fluid on hand for the salty sludge kicked up by other vehicles on the road.
The vital fluids of an engine also need to be inspected.
“Most people get their fluids checked constantly when they take their car in for oil changes if they get the routine maintenance, but it’s always a good idea to double check,” Kerry Graver of Stan Graver’s Auto Repair in Lehighton said.
Graver also advises checking the battery and the lights of the vehicle.
