Art league holds annual show at Osprey House
The Carbon County Art League held its sixth annual show last weekend at the Osprey House in Slatington.
"This is our first year here, they have been very gracious to let us use the space," Carla Binder, CCAL committee chairwoman, said.
"We had a very good turnout. Everyone has been pointing out favorites and it's been very varied. We've had multiple art sales."
The show had over 20 artist submit several works in painting, drawing and photography. Awards were given to winners in two categories: painting and works on paper and the second category of photography.
Two judges, Brad Brown of Palmerton and Anita Collins of Kutztown decided the first, second, third and honorable mention prizes for both categories.
Wayne D. Yurchak received honorable mention in the painting category for his four seasons panel works.
"They took a couple hours each," he said. "I started painting 10 years ago with supplies I bought on eBay. I never thought I'd be good enough to win prizes."
Jim Thorpe studio owner and art instructor, Jay Davenport, took first place for his up-close K-9 piece.
"He's so down to earth," student Mary Anne Shafer said.
Shafer also placed in the category, with a pastel rendering of Beltzville Lake during sun set.
"We wanted something to offer for everyone," said Binder.
The cost to join the art league for 2016 is $20. There is no age limit for a membership.
"We've been trying to reach out to students and get them involved," Binder said.
The league currently averages 40 members. The next show will be held Father's Day weekend in June at the Palmerton Library.
