Support for Harvilla for Sheriff

Published October 26. 2015 04:00PM

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter in support of Tony Harvilla's campaign to become the next Sheriff of Carbon County.

I have been a deputy sheriff for 35 years and I have had the pleasure of knowing Tony and working with him for all of those years. When I became a county employee, he was already the chief adult probation officer for Carbon County.

As he advanced himself, becoming a federal probation officer, he did not forget where he came from. Even after becoming the chief federal probation officer for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, he still was a valuable asset to me and the residents of Carbon County.

The sheriff is a servant of the Court of Common Pleas. The sheriff is not a police officer.

Tony understands the role of the sheriff is to provide security for judges and court proceedings, transport prisoners, serve writs and bench warrants and be responsible for the security and safety of everyone entering the courthouse.

Tony being born and raised in Carbon County means that he understands what matters most to the residents of the county. Seldom in an election do you get a candidate with the level of education (master's degree in public administration, bachelor's degree in criminal justice) and experience, wanting to run for an office to make a difference for his home county. He is also the only candidate certified as a deputy sheriff by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, the agency responsible for the education and training of deputy sheriffs in Pennsylvania.

In closing I would like to say that I fully support Tony Harvilla for sheriff and hope the residents of Carbon County vote for a proven leader such as he is on election day.
