State police at Lehighton barracks said a car crashed and flipped onto its roof in an incident at 3:15 p.m. Friday on Route 248, about a mile west of the Bowmanstown exit in that municipality.

Police said Dillon W. Williams, 22, of Palmerton, was taken by the Palmerton Ambulance to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for head injuries.

Police said he was driving a vehicle westbound on Route 248 and was traveling at a high rate of speed as it attempted to pass a vehicle on its left.

Police said due to the rate of speed and heavy traffic conditions, Williams was unable to pass the vehicle safely, losing control of the vehicle as he swerved onto the west shoulder to avoid colliding with the vehicle traveling in front of it.

Police said Williams' car re-entered the right-hand lane and began to rotate counter-clockwise as it traveled across the left-hand lane. The initial impact occurred as the car struck the center concrete divider with its driver's side front end, which caused the vehicle to roll over onto its roof.

Police said the vehicle slid approximately 200 feet before coming to rest in the right-hand lane of Route 248 westbound.

Police said Williams was cited for failure to drive at a safe speed.
