Thanks for Memorial Day turnout
Thank you to everyone for the great turnout for our Lehighton Memorial Day service in the park! It turned out to be even more grand than I expected, except for the sound system. Most of us in attendance could not hear what I'm sure were very fine speeches which took those people a lot of time to prepare. Either the sound system is not so good, or the speakers were not told how to speak into the microphone so they could be heard. I'm sure by next year's Memorial Day service in the park, everything will be just fine.
The loss of the parade is no fault of our great Lehighton Band, it is simply the "passing of time," which slowly takes away the strength and health and youth of the members. I can't believe that none of our "illustrious school board," teachers or students, did not come forward and offer to volunteer their services of our great Lehighton High School Band to provide Lehighton with a Memorial Day parade, IF that is what the people want. After all, a high school band simply keeps being replaced, staying exactly what it is, a high school band, always able to march to the drum.
Seems to me that all the spooks, goblins, witches and ghosts of autumn are more important than all the men and women who've served, protected and died for our United States of America, thus, there is a greater parade and an even greater showing of residents for the Halloween parade than there has ever been over the past few years for the Memorial Day parade.
Shame on us, shame on Lehighton's leaders, school board, school band and whoever could've done something about it, but IF a Memorial Day parade is what the people want, having our high school band do the Memorial Day parade would also instill in these young people a greater sense of pride in our veterans, fallen heroes and the great history of our nation, IF this is what our people want.
Respectfully,
Ruthann Schlecht
