Lansford man facing charges for DUI
A Lansford man faces three driving under the influence charges after he was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Nesquehoning last year.
According to Nesquehoning police, officers were dispatched to the area of 127 W. Catawissa St. for a motor vehicle crash on Dec. 18.
Upon arrival, police found a blue Toyota Matrix on the curb in front of the residence. A man was standing outside the vehicle.
Officer Richard Neikam identified the man as Justin Vavro, 35, of 843 E. Ridge St., and as he took his information, he noticed Vavro was speaking slowly and had trouble keeping his balance.
Vavro said he was coming from CVS Pharmacy and heading home when the crash occurred.
Neikam asked how much he had to drink and if he was on any illegal substances. Vavro said he had three shots of vodka but nothing else.
Neikam also spoke to the owner of the other vehicle involved in the crash.
Kim Shafer, who lives at that residence, was inside her apartment when she heard a loud bang. Upon coming out of the apartment, she found that her vehicle, which was parked across the street, had been struck on the driver's side.
Vavro submitted to field sobriety tests and failed. He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital - Miners Campus in Coaldale for a blood sample.
Toxicology reports came back that Vavro's blood alcohol content was 0.219, 0.139 above the legal limit. He also had evidence of lorazepam and alprazolam in his system at the time of the crash.
He was arraigned before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 23.
